THE GOLD PLACE

I've always been enthusiastic about
my job atthe Gold Place. I've enjoyed
helping people with gift problems. I've
loved helping couples select dinnerware, flatware and stemware pat-
terns. I've taken great pride in our huge and unique stock and our dis-
tinctive lines of merchandise. Yes, every minute of my eight years at the
Gold Place has been exciting.

And...it's been even more exciting since I have been appointed buyer.
I have just returned from a fantastic buying trip with several special
purchases of fine china, stainless steel flatware and lead crystal stem-
ware. Eliz Valassis, the Gold Place owner, instructed me to search out
the "real bargains"...and I certainly did! I surprised even Eliz...and
you're going to be surprised how much you are going to save!

Both Eliz and I are anxious to have you visit the Gold Place soon. There
is so much that's new that you should see. I especially recommend...

State of Michigan at the old De-
troit House of Corrections site.
Just last year, Hirschberg
joined the newly-organized De-
troit Chapter of Vietnam Vete-
rans. The group participated in ,\/
a veterans' parade last Memo-
rial Day. For the first time
people cheered. Hirschberg felt
proud to be a Vietnam veteran. \,
"It was a long time coming. It
felt good."

medical school student
in the mid-60s, - Harvey
Olds followed the path
of many classmates
concerned about the
draft. He joined the Berry Plan,
in which he could finish medical
school and one year of intern-
ship. Then he would be expected
to enter the armed service of his
choice, going in with the rank of
captain. Still the odds against
going to Vietnam seemed great.
Midway into his internship
year, Olds was jolted into reality
with a letter requiring him to (.7
attend a one-week course in
jungle medicine. Three days la-
ter, his orders arrived.
As soon as he finished his in-
ternship, Olds left for Vietnam.
Assigned to a large Air Force
base hospital, he ran the sick
clinic and infirmary as a gen-
eral duty officer.
To assuage his loneliness for r-2\
his wife and baby son, he be-
came quite active organizing
Jewish activities at his base.
"At least two Fridays a month,
we had an Army truck pick up
men from around the -area. We
used lay leaders to lead our
short service. Afterwards we ,---/\
had a reception. Some- wine,
salami, canned manischewitz,
people brought whatever little ),
they had." -\
"These services were so mean-
ingful to me. We were together
as Jews, enlisted men, officers; )
rank made no difference. We ' \
drew together, surrounded as we
were by danger and death."
Olds vividly recalls a seder
with over 100 people. "We read
and sang with rockets going off
around us."
Today, Olds is a pediatrician
in private practice in Flint. His
son is now 17, and he and his
wife also have a daughter, 13.
Of his Vietnam experience, he
feels ambiguous. "I really don't
consider myself a veteran. I
don't feel I helped my country."
Yet he remembers with great
clarity the close sense of com-
munity he felt with his fellow
Jewish servicemen. "Jewish cel-
ebrations have never taken on
so intense a meaning for me."

uth and David Green-
wald promised their
18-year-old son Dennis
anything if he would
not enlist in the Army.
"We • pleaded with him, but he
was very patriotic. He felt he
was doing it for the country. He
hoped he would keep other men
from going over," Mrs. Green-
wald explains.
In 1967, two days before his
19th birthday, Dennis was kil-
led in the field. He was post-
