people is probably the most
moving of all the sagas of the
human experience," especially
what he called 18 centuries of
"privations and persecutions,
homecoming to the promised
land and the victory of state-
hood."
Asked what the general mood
is among the British and in Par-
liament toward Israel, Churchill
replied "basically pro." However,
he added, "The government will
react on a - case by case basis. If
Israel is doing what it (the gov-
ernment) believes to be right
then the government will give it
bouquets. If it (Israel) is doing
what it (the government) be-
lieves to be wrong, then it will
say so. He added that there is
basically "overwhelmingly
favorable inclination in support
of Israel."
Prior to entering politics,
Churchill was a journalist, hav-
ing covered the Six-Day War,
Biafra and Vietnam, among
others. He found his experience
covering the Six-Day War most
intriguing, but an assignment in
the U.S. proved more dangerous.
During the Democratic Na-
tional Convention in Chicago in
1968 where Churchill was on
assignment, he tried to re-enter
his hotel, the Conrad Hilton,
during the height of the rioting.
The police told him he could not
enter and asked his name. After
giving the information, the offi-
cers thought he was pulling a
fast one and "cracked me on the

Churchill said it is "wrong to
have truck or parley with ter-
rorists" and added he thinks Is-
rael should talk with Jordan
about a resolution to the
Mideast conflict. On a different
note, he called the introduction
of nuclear weapons into the area
"a desperately worrying situa-
tion."
"The Middle East should be
defused as soon as possible.
There is a possibility in the
months ahead to come to some
solution."
Churchill lauded the Jewish
state on many scores, especially
on its technological advance-
ments and its absorption
policies.
In an interview with The
Jewish News prior to the dinner,
Churchill said his friendship for
Israel was influenced by his
famous grandfather, the late
British Prime Minister Winston
Churchill, and by his father,
with whom he wrote a book on
the Six-Day War.
"I may not be a Jew, but I
count myself as a Zionist. I've
long believed in the Zionist
cause, that it is not only desira-
ble to the Jewish nation to have
a homeland, but I think that Is-
rael's contribution so far and
potential contribution in the fu-
ture to mankind is enormous."
The MP, vice president of the
British Technion Society who is
on a U.S. tour on behalf of Is-
rael's technological university,
said he was intrigued by Israel's
history. "The story of the Jewish
