Schauer Dinner Benefits Chabad

Ivan Bloch, associate chair-
man of the Nov. 20 concert hon-
oring Emma Lazaroff-Schaver,
has announced that the proceeds
will support Chabad activities
and institutions throughout
Michigan.
Chabad-Lubavitch maintains
offices in almost every country
and major city around the
world. Its activities include
yeshivot, girls' schools, voca-
tional schools, three settlements
in Israel, a Girl's Town for 1,200
high school and college-age
girls, scores of Chabad
Lubavitch houses, Peace Corps
programs, assistance for orphans
and widows of Israeli war vic-
tims, camps, encounters, settle-
ment and education for Soviet
Jewry, a Mitzvah Campaign and
more.
In Michigan, Lubavitch stres-
ses education. The Bais Chabad
Religious School, an afternoon
and Sunday school, shares the
Jack and Miriam Shenkman
Education Center in Farmington
Hills with a day school where
children as young as 3 begin
Jewish studies. Total enrollment
is 260 pupils.
Chabad House Nursery and
pre-1A serves the Grand Rapids
community. Hundreds of stu-
dents have studied in the var-
ious University of Michigan
Chabad House courses.. Private
classes and adult-education ses-
sions are held throughout the

Alma, Holland and Benton Har-
bor.
Around the state, Lubavitch
distributes sh'mura matzot at
Passover, shallach manot food-
gift packages by the thousands
at Purim, menorot at Chanukah
and lulav/etrog kits at Succot.
The shofar is sounded for the
bedridden on Rosh Hashanah,
and Lubavitch volunteers reg-
ularly visit Jewish patients at
Harper, Grace, Providence,
Beaumont and Botsford Hospi-
tals.

son of recreation and Jewish
education in two separate camp
sessions on Camp Gan Israel's
660 acres of pine forests near
Kalkaska.
The Schaver-Lazaroff Student
Center on the University of

provides Judaic studies courses,
Passover Sedarim, Shabbat and
holiday meals, services and
counseling. Visits are made to
Michigan State University,
Western, Grand Valley State
and Kalamazoo colleges and

A Thought for the Week, writ-
ten by Rabbi Yitschak Kagan, is
read by more than 100,000
families in seven languages
around the world. The Jewish
Sound radio program is heard in
the Detroit area every Sunday
evening at 11 p.m. on WNIC-
AM (1310). Nine thousand
families have a regularly serv-
iced Lubavitch pushkeh (charity
box). Marriage and personal
counseling is an on-going serv-
ice. Chabad House on Wheels
reaches Jewish families as far
north as the Upper Peninsula.
The Irwin I. Cohn Memorial
Lecture Series in Talmudic law
features four yearly lectures for
laWyers and judges with speak-
ers of national renown.
Rabbi Elimelech Silverberg
heads Cong. Bais Chabad of
West Bloomfield, and Rabbi
Chaim M. Bergstein leads Cong.
Bais Chabad Synagogue.
The concert and dinner honor-
ing Mrs. Schaver's 80th birth-
day will take place at Detroit's
Masonic Temple, and will fea-
ture world-famous violin vir-
tuoso, Isaac Stern. Co-Chairmen
are Paul Borman and David
Hermelin. Ivan Bloch is associ-
ate chairman. The 1985
Endowment Fund Drive Chair-
man is Jack Shenkman.
Concert Vice Chairmen are:
Fred Ferber, Irving Gastman,
Seymour Joffe, Sam Sobel, Max
Sosin, and Philip T. Warren.
Sixty founders of $18,000
endowment-Funds will each re-
ceive the "Ambassador of Torah"
award at the concert.

American family, domestic vio-
lence, suicide and drug use
among young people and the
threat of religious cults will be
among the issues discussed by
800 Reform Jewish women at
the 35th biennial assembly of
the National Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods this
weekend in Los Angeles.
