evaluators,

and
grammarian are called on to
comment on each speaker.
Throughout, when a speaker
approaches the podium he
shakes hands with his intro-
ducer and then typically ad-
dresses the audience: "Thank
you Mr. (Ms.) Toastmaster, fel-
low toastmasters, and guests."
This ritual is repeated dozens of
times during the evening. It is
one of the few formal aspects of
the club, but everything has its
purpose.

friendly manner. We want to
encourage people, not discourage
them."

time outside the meeting pre-
paring for a speech as he wants
to. Bissinger estimates people
put in from three to ten hours of
preparation per speech.
Although the organization is
less than a year old, the JCC
Toastmasters are already think-
ing about their short-term and
long-term growth. Bissinger's
immediate task is to beef up
membership, currently at 20.
"Summertime is typically a slow
season for this kind of thing," he
admits. "A lot of people would
rather be outdoors. During the
fall and winter I'd like to double
