between five and seven. Mem-
bership in the club includes
comprehensive instructive man-
uals offering guidelines on
choosing a speech topic, writing
and delivery, methods of evalua-
tion, follow-up help, and a sub-
scription to the monthly
Toastmaster magazine.
A typical two-hour meeting
consists of the president con-
ducting business, and introduc-
ing that evening's toastmaster
(master of ceremonies). The
toastmaster takes the podium,
shakes hands with the president
and explains the duties of the
timer, grammarian, tabletopic
master and evaluators, and then
introduces them.
The tabletopic master con-
ducts those speeches, and after a
short break the toastmaster in-
troduces the prepared speakers
for the evening. When all the
speakers have finished, the
and Steve Fligman and Darrell
Yee received honorable men-
tions.
Bissinger notes, "We're self-
paced. You're never forced to do
anything you don't want to do."
Adds Beron, "We'll hear about
five or six speeches every meet-
ing on many different subjects
and I always feel like I know
more after a meeting than when
I walked in." "We've got some
really informed people in here,"
concurs Bissinger.
Recent speech subjects in-
cluded everything from the
topical —the Detroit People
Mover — to light and humorous
— the decline of the Detroit Ti-
gers, the art of selling egg rolls
— and the deeply serious —
Florida's recent mercy killing
episode.
Impromptu speeches (called
tabletopics) last about two min-
utes and prepared speeches last
