proposal of direct flights from
the Soviet Union to Israel for
emigrating Soviet Jews was "a
proposal on our side, without a
response from the other side."
He added that, from the Soviet
viewpoint, allowing Soviet citi-
zens to emigrate to places other
than- their homelands could lead
other Soviet citizens to seek the
same right. The 75-minute
teleconference by satellite, spon-
sored by the American Zioist
Federation, covered a wide
range of subjects. Peres was
questioned in Jerusalem follow-
ing a lengthy Cabinet meeting
by a panel in New York and by
individual viewers at the 19
U.S. and Canadian locations.
Panellist Elizabeth Holtzman
asked Peres how his offer on
talks with Jordan, put forward
in a speech at the United Na-
tions last week, was being re-
ceived in Israel.
"Usually," Peres replied, "the
ones who read it fully supported
it fully, the ones who read it
partly supported it partly" —
and, he conceded, there was also
some criticism. But he indicate
that he thought the Knesset
would support his initiative.
Asked by Daniel Schorr about
the Cabinet meeting, Peres said,
"We surely had our divisions,
but my feelings are that we
shall have enough support to
carry on."
On another question, whether
King Hussein of Jordan is too
weak to make peace with Israel
by himself, Peres said: "Why
