To all this, reading and re-
reading Silberman's article is
like hearng soft music. When he
sees the value of adherence to
tradition as a vial element in
Jewish identity, he is on sound
historical ground. And to you a

Definitions

To settle the matter of the ex-
pression, "Even though he has
sinned, he is an Israelite" "At al
pi shechoto, Yisroel hu" it is
necessary to return to the
source. To quote a phrase out of
.context only serves to create
confusion, despite the ses-
quipedalian listings of refer-
ences by Rabbi Charles
Rosenzweig, in last week's issue
of The Jewish News.
In the Book of Joshua, chap-
ters 6 and 7, we are told that
when the children of Israel con-
quered the city of Jericho, they
were commanded to level the
city and destory everything in it

of his crime, made an open com-
plete confession before Joshua
and all Israel. For his crimes,

Of Achan, it is said (Sanhed-
rin 43b and 44a), "Af al pi
shechoto, Yisroel hu" "Even
though he has sinned, he is an
Israelite." The paradigm is di-
dactic; it is intended to teach us,
by practical application, a
statement made in the Mishna
(Sanhedrin 43b) that "Whoever
confesses his sins has a share in
the World to Come." ...

Mort Zieve does a good job of
reviewing movies for The
Jewish News, but in the case of
Joshua, he, somewhat, missed
the boat.
After reading his great review -
of the movie I hurried to see it. I
could appreciate the fact that-
Joshua came from the "other
side of the tracks" and adjusted
my thinking, accordingly. In the 4"
pool room scene and the strip-
tease scene, however, I found
the language so distasteful and
embarrassing that it seemed to
cloud the balance of the movie
and it played catch-up after
that.
Don't misunderstand, how-
ever. The movie is still very
much worth seeing, but Mr.
Zieve should have added, don't
take your mother to see Joshua.

Name Missed

Thank you for the feature
story on Jacob Kurtz (Oct. 18)
"On to 120" by Ellyce Field, an
excellent reporter. It is regretful
that Mr. -Kurtz's son, Paul
Kurtz, was somehow left out. He
is indeed a very important part
of our father's life.
