ANOTHER GEM THAT has
abounded on the East Side ...
and there are quite a few lately
... is one that takes only 20
minutes if that much to arrive
at.
The Victorian Room on 12
Mile Rd. in Warren, about 200
yards west of Ryan Rad., was a
Friendly Ice Cream place before
being taken over on June 3 of
this year by Tony Costanzo, Vic-
tor Schiavi and Aldo Olivero.
Seating is for about 80 in a
quaint Victorian setting ... red
leather padded booths . . . red
leather padded seats at tables
. three large long-stemmed,

six-headed lamps atop booths
along the center . . . and single
ones on the floral painted walls
... Red curtains cover the win-
dows and door ... A bar with

enough seats to sit at, drink and
converse, sets quietly to a side.
But the big story regarding
this restaurant isn't its lovely
decor ... There's much about
the food and service that is
familiar ... and with reason.
In the kitchen preparing such
wonderful dishes is head chef
Gus Crocenzi, who cooked for 20
years at Larco's Inn before it
burned down on W. McNichols
near Livernois.
And the waiter looked mighty
familiar ... he should ... Silvio
Lanza, whose excellence we
noticed so many times while he
was at Larco's Inn, served many
people with gracious know-how
during his 16 years there.
Except for the interior design
... and more reasonable prices
. . . one might think he or she
were back at Larco's Inn on W.
McNichols.
All dinners include soup,
salad, choice of potatoes or veg-
etable, dish of spaghetti, bread
and breadsticks.

tomatoes and solid chick peas
had the house dressing we enjoy
so much . Victorian Room's
thick minestrone soup was su-
perb ... Dish of spaghetti with
tender noodles and heavy meat
sauce was delicious.
One of us ordered the Veal
Piccante . . . and another the
Veal Colombo ... If Gus still
cooked as he did at Larco's Inn,
for sure they would be extreme
delicacies . . . We tasted both
dishes ... and heartily attest to
their savory goodness ... tender
veal prepared in delicate taste.
At another table, one of the
persons had ordered filet with
the famous Larco's zip sauce he

obviously had heard about . . .

We watched as this gentleman
closed his eyes in ecstacy,
smiled and relished every bit of
his very tender-looking filet.
On our plate with the veal
were those wonderful sliced
Santana Potatoes.
THe Victorian Room dining
adventure included Zuppa In-
glese (cake made with four
liqueurs and rum) and canoli
both homemade.
An eagerness -to discover for
ourselves about Executive Chef
Gus Crocenzi and waiter Silvio
Lanza emerged as an enjoyable
and eventful gift.
The Victorian Room is defi-
nitely wonderful to know about.
SOUTHFIELD SEASONof
"Concerts-in-the . . . Garden"
has something for all music lov-
ers ... 13 Sunday morning
classical, upbeat jazz and con-
temporary concerts are set for
the November 1985 through
May 1986 season ... Concerts
begin at 10:30 and last about
11/2 hours ($5.50 brunch ...
$3.50 coffee only).
Initial concert is this Sunday
at Prudential Town Center Civic
Center Drive and U.SR 10 ...
featuring jazz flutist Alexander
Zonjic Quintet ... First six con-
certs will be at Prudential, be-
fore going to Tel-12 Mall and
Northland.
"Concerts-in-the-Garden" is
sponsored by Southfield's Cul-
tural Arts Division, under a
grant from the Michigan Coun-
cil for the Arts . . . For more

AN EDUCATION IN Cajun
dining might best describe re-
cent Cajun Food Festival put on
by Jack McCarthy's Restaurant
. across the street at Santia
Hall on Cass Lake Rd. . . . A
large group of people paid $25
each to enjoy an authentic
Cajun dinner and some good
conviviality.
Jack isn't a Cajun, but was
born in Cajun country, New
Iberia, Louisiana ... and is an
expert on the authentic dishes
. . . Many so-called "Cajun foods"
sweeping the country are any-
thing but the real thing.
People who love to eat, and
experiment on dishes they never
had before, thrilled to the varied
delights prepared at Jack's
Cajun Festival ... with each de-
licacy narrated about by him on
stage . . . When people think of
Louisiana, they perhaps have
thoughts too of Dixieland and

jazz ... That's New Orleans ...
Cajun music is more homespun
country ... as is its cooking ...
and folks living by the bayous
like the soft, relaxed strains ...
This music kept pace with the
evening's food authenticity as
pleasant fiddler rhythms wafted
live from the stage.
We got lucky ... and sat at a
table with some swell folks ...
Renee and Bob Levy (he took
tabs one to ten from all at table
on each course) ... Dr. Richard
Anslow, noted internist having
much to talk about with phar-
macist Larry Kantor ...
Roberta and Wil Viviano . . .
Being bossman of the Viviano
Wines, Wil brought four of his
favorites from the trunk of his
car for all at our table to enjoy
... Viviano Wines handles some
imports, but is very big on
California wines ... with over
50 labels.
Jack had plenty of help from
his restaurant . . . and being
across the street, wife Carole
was able to be back and forth
... Their two sons, Sean and
Brett were great assistants to
Dad.
The menu was interestingly
delicious ... Breast of duck,
tasso (smoked beef) and oyster
gumbo ... blackfish with
shrimps and carrots ... pleasant
with a tender bite ... fried soft
shell crab (nothing like Balti-
more) dipped in egg batter and
delicious . . . garlic smothered
shrimp with rice ... authentic
Louisiana salad with Wop dres-
sing (a lot of vinegar) ... Cajun
stuffed meat, jambalaya and
maque choux (pronounced mak
chew), corn-on-the-cob shaved
off and cooked with oil, milk
and peppers ... Catfish court
bouillion ... hot pumpkin turn-
over with pecans and authentic
community coffee from Baton
Rouge.
Cajun food does not have to be
hot and spicy to be good ... Res-
taurants who pour on cayenne
pepepr galore to fake authentic-
ity misrepresent Cajun cooking
... and do it a gross injustice
... Real Cajun indeed needs no
camouflage to make it good.
ANOTHER VERSION of the
famous Ink Spots will be at
Somerset Mall, Nov. 17 ... two
free shows, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ...
singing If I Didn't Care (sold
over 7,000,000 copies), Java
Jive, Sunny Side of The Street
and other greats from the 30s
and 40s.
This Sunday, the free concerts
has Susan Ivers Bara and Ruth
Myers, classical flute and harp
duo.
