Vaad Response

The Vaad's response (Oct. 18)
to the "Am Echad" piece (Oct.
J 11) was disappointing. It is not
• hard to distinguish between the
commitment of Orthodox Jews
\73 to pray only in Orthodox shuls
and the Aguda's action, telling
0 other Jews not to pray in Con-
servative or Reform shuls .. .
Many Orthodox Jews are in-
,
terested in outreach and in
educating other Jews to become
more observant. To the best of
my knowledge, berating the ob-
ject of your education is not
high on the list of effective
teaching methods. The way the
Vaad approached its references
j to aliyah, college campuses, etc.,
rs' had a "holier than thou" flavor
to it, which is. unfortunate. It
seems to assume that Conserva-
tive and Reform Judaism are
some kind of local, unappetizing
phenomenon, and that they will
go away some day because they
don't do anything for anybody
anyway. This is the kind of
• wishful thinking referred to by
Irving Greenberg in his article a
f ew weeks ago.
Further, the implicit and
explicit put-downs of all Jews
but the Orthodox just doesn't
hold water. If the Vaad truly be-
lieves that Orthodox Jewry is
alone in its good works, then let
it stop honoring those who
• attend Conservative and Re-
formcongregations, or none at
all. Let us see a few years in
which all Orthodox affairs onor
• only the Rosh Yeshiva (at $150
a plate) or, perhaps, a member
• of the Aguda speaking on "when
is a shul not a shul."
We need Orthodox Jewry. And
it needs us. We appeal to the
Vaad and to other Orthodox
Jews. Work with us, yes. Berate
us, to.

In your issue of Sept. 6, you
had a perennially new approach
to Jewish living by Charles Sil-
berman; it was refreshing. You
had your prophet of doom in the
august person of Dr. Irving
- Greenberg some weeks back.
_With a stern warning again in
the issue of Sept. 7, adding the
new dimension of seeking out a
missing link to bridge the gap
in our spiritual disorientation.
Evolutionary Charles Darwin
-•also had reference to a missing
link to bridge the gap between
man and monkey. If Greenberg
fdllows a similar pattern, all
that can be said is that Or-
thodoxy tries to emulate the
heritage bequeathed to us by
our Fathers Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob. If Greenberg finds him-
self in need of linkage to it he
will achieve it if he tries hard.
In your issue of Oct. 4, you
had a highbrow article by the
well-heeled Arya Carmon on
Survivalism and exemplary
society, seemingly equating one
against the other; and broadly
hinting that Orthodoxy may im-
pede a satisfactory-to-him solu-
tion. He likewise suggested dire
consequences unless his implied
