OPENING THE WEEK Of NOVEMBER 410,

Looking for a store with panache and pizzazz?

found her own company, but
learned it was no easy task.
First was the problem of find-
ing investors to whom she had
to present a workable business
plan. Then, there was the ac-
quisition of a building, finding
distributors as well as acquiring
properties, equipment and hir-
ing employees. Previously, she
served mainly in an editorial
capacity; now she had to serve
as a full-blown business woman.
She called the business end of
forming her company awesome
at the very least.
"It's complex. Business is best
done by somebody who knows
it."
One of the problems she faced
was the sale of the building in
which Newmarket is located.
She calls the relocation "pain-
ful." The forthcoming distributor
change also is cause for adjust-
ments.
Yet, for all her endeavors, she
has a great support system, her
husband of six years, psychol-
ogist Dr. Stanley Fisher.
"He's one of my principal
counselors. He provides a very
strong support system for me."
Her family, brother Sol of
Livonia and his wife Barbara
and their children, and brother
Dr. Harold of West Bloomfield
and his wife, Rhodie, and their
children are among her biggest
supporters, and she keeps in
close contact with them. She re-
ceives a lot of submissions from
Detroiters.
She said Detroiters have a
place in the New York publish {
ing world, naming former resi-
dents Carol Brown of Dell and
Wall St. Journal columnist/
cultural editor Ray Sakarov
among them.
Margolis counts others in pub-
lishing in her social circles, and
tries to maintain good relations
with other firms. "That enables
me to do consulting," she said,
and there is a friendly exchange
of properties.
Was Bantam sad to see her
leave? She answers, yes and no,
but said management change

MARCY'S BOUTIQUE

The unusual accessories that no one has?

A sensational purse, a dynamic belt,

really put a damper on the
place. "It wasn't really the same
Bantam."
In addition to her daily opera-
tions, she serves as a publishing
conultant to Columbia Pictures.
She reads scripts and arranges
for publishers. In addition, she
reviews films the studio puts
into production "to see what
kind of books can be developed
as an additional marketing tool
for them," she explained. While
at Bantam, she worked many
times with the California-based
movie studios.
Cross marketing is another
area in which her expertise lies.
She negotiates book properties
which can be turned into TV
programs or videocassettes. Cur-
rently, she is helping to develop
a program for TV — Public
Broadcasting or cable — that
would feature the author of a
book on stress.
In her career, she has had oc-
casion to meet many of the
world's top authors, among them
Jacqueline Susann, Leon Uris,
Arthur Halley, Gore Vidal,
William Stevenson, Jerzy
Kosinski, Barbara Cartland,
Louis L'Amour, Tom Wolfe, Irv-
ing Wallace, Maya Angelou, Ed
Doctorow, Paul Zindel, Alvin
Toffler and Peter Maas.
In addition to her editorial
experience, she is involved in
other aspects of the industry. In
1981, she chaired the American
Book Awards. She also is on the
board of the publications di-
vision of the Sierra Club, on the
national advisory board of the
Center for the Book in the Li-
brary of Congress and on the
board for New York Is Book
Country, of which she was a
founder.
In 1979, she accompanied 18
other publishers on the first of-
ficial American publishers' dele-
gation to the People's Republic
of China.
Her affiliations include the
Publishers Publicity Associa-
tion, the Publishers Ad Club,
