Rosenow has not been forgot- ten by his fellow Shanghai im- migrants, Berl Falbaum was a very young boy in Shanghai, but he remembeis Rosenow. "He played at my bar mitzvah and at my wedding and for a number of Shanghai German Jews who came to this country." Charlie Weiner is an original Continental and serves as Rosenow's arranger, the second in command. He, like Rosenow, enjoys his work tremendously. "I like any music if it's played well," he explained. Weiner's wife, Ingeborg, is also a native of Shanghai. The long-time band member recently retired from Cass Tech High School where he was a counselor for the music department. He has had some music published by a New York company, and has also played with The Detroit Concert Band. The Continentals admire and respect their talented leader, who got his show business start as a child actor in Germany, ap- pearing in 26 .films. The band leader is fluent in six languages — English, 'German, Yiddish, 'Chinese, Russian and French — so communication with band members or the audience is al- most never a problem:- While he devotes much of his time to the Continentals . and their bookings, Rosenow still finds time for B'nai B'rith's Al- bert Einstein Lodge and other Friday, October 25, 1985 69 activities within the community. In 1981, he was honored for his outstanding service to Israel Bonds and he is past vice president of Shaarit Haplaytah, the Detroit-area organization of Holocaust survivors. "I'm enjoying my, work and I don't think about retiring," he said. "I enjoy it, so it's really nbt that hard 'work. I've been doing it all my life. "(The late) Guy . Lombardo, Benny Goodman -- they've all done it. I'm the big local potato. Rosenow has played many roles in his almost 70 years. From child actor, refugee, to la- borer at the Dodge Main Fac- tory in Hamtramck."And now he has found his niche as a popular local entertainer. 0 CANDLE LIGHTING TIME 6:18 P.M. Detroit'.
