THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ectra ysts by Diane ,Cee "Where Fit Is Foremost" LETTERS Kosins Uptown Southfield Rd. at 111/2 Mile 559.3900 Disengagement I was, as many others were, disturbed deeply, by the Ag-uda's advertisement. I, have.been even more troubled, however, by the failure of any wing orprominent rabl jjjx, the Orthodox movement in t e 'Muted States to disavow or Tenountoo-.41re placement, although there has been ample time to do so. If any prominent anti-Semite were to make as, direct• an as- sault as the Aguda on Jews (let alone any portion of the Jewish people), we would go into action to counter the assault well as await denunciations from prom- inent secular community lead- ers ... The harsh statements by the Aguda underscore their self- imposed disengagement and dis- enfranchisement from not only other Jews, but the world itself. They do not understand how to appeal to others except by threat and insult. They do not know how to teach, only how to bully. . - In contrast, many Orthodox rabbis and their followers understand and act on the pre- cept that softly applied teaching, leading to true and deeply-felt understanding and commitment, can achieve the result they seek. It is to' them, and similarly oriented Orthodox Jews of all factions, that I appeal. If you really agree wih the Aguda, then let the rest of us know, so that we may deal with your dis- engagement from us. If you do not agree with' the Aguda then let us' also know, so that we may together counter this most hor- rid act by word and deed. Rabbis, and •nowhere could I find a word or implication about the Holocaust Memorial, nurs- ing homes or Israeli Bonds. More over, I could not find any- thing casting any judgement on any , individutttjow.7 .:1 3.9fmn •Coinkenrativrjse. It seemed to me that-this ad- vertisement was simply stating a point in Jewish law, and, per- haps, a halachic rejection of cer- tain clergy who have, them- selves rejected Halacha. I don't think 'that the inflam- matory, and I feel, baseless re- marks in this editorial serve a purpose in furthering the goal of Am Echad. , Mrs. R, Perlstein Although the Purely Com- mentary article Oct. 11 was try- ing to make' a certain point re- garding unity within Judaism, it is quite apparent that the ef- fect of the article was just the opposite. The reaction of many people I have spoken with makes it quite obvious that the , article was quite damaging to the harmony of our community. I certainly hope, that in the future, consideration will be given before printing articles such as this which pit one group against another. Jack Zwick Danes Visit Holocaust Center As a member of The Danish Brotherhood in Michigan it was my honor to initiate and ar range a visitation of our group to The Holocaust Memorial Cen- ter last week. All of my friends in this group are of the Christian faith. I am a Danish Jew. We all know of the love and admiration the Jewish people have for Denmark, and it would be appropriate on this occasion to felate once more to our Jewish community' and the Danish people here and in De- nmark that we still remember. Much has been written about Denmark's heroic and noble un- - dertaking, the rescue of their Jewish compatriots from De- nmark to Sweden, and it would be gracious- listening to a local voice relating about those fate- ful days ... Achdus Necessity Mr. Slomovitz is correct in pointing out the necessity for "Achdus" in the Jewish commu- nity. However, his singling out of Ray Moshe Feinstein as an opponent of "Achdus" is entirely fallacious. The real issue facing the Jewish community is "Achdus" with whom or what kind 'of community will be left in the 10 years? 'Historically, the viability of the Conservative and Reform Movements can be questioned by their failure to offset the rate of intermarriage among their membership or stem the tide of non-affiliation among the larger Jewish com- munity. In their quest to be modern and relevent the Conservative and Reform movements have literally thrown out the baby with the bath water, being Jewish/involves more than feel- ing' Jewish or identifying with Jewish causes. It means that one has to live like a Jew. . .
