ducted by Steven M. Cohen and
Paul Ritterband.
The data collected from more
than 4,000 households in New
York shoWed that Jews who
have the strongest connection to
• Judaism and the Jewish com-
munity also have a lower proba-
bility of ever, having been di-
vorced.
There is:great interest in the
• Jewish community about, mari-
tal stability, says Brodbai-
Nemzer, since it is believed that
increased 'instability and divorce
weakens "the family's capacity
to preserve the community."
Although 'divorce among,
American Jews has increased
since the mid-1960s,- that rise.
parallels a rise in divorce in the
population at large.
• But, despite the increase, re-,
search has shown that American.
Jews are less likely to, divorce '
than other religious groups. •
• According
to
Broclbar=
Nemzer's Eitudy, the slower rate
of diyorce, „among Jews comes
from Judaic ; traditions that
stress group commitment and'
values of family stability and
cohesion.
•
The population survey upon
which „Brodbar-Nemzer's study
is based shows that the lowest
rate of divorce is among the Or-
thodox, with a slight increase
among Conservative Jews. '
