established a Michigan registry
for bone marrow transplanta-
tion, which will eventually be
computer-linked to similar re-
gistries throughout the country.
Arthur Weiss told reporters
about a 1984 study, indicating
that a national 'registry 'Would
need only 900,000 names to in
sure a 90 percent chance of find-
ing a donor for virtually
everyone needing a bone mar-
row transplant.
"We are conducting donor
searches for about six children"
now," said Weiss. A simple
blood test determines donor
suitability, and disposable nee-
dles have eliminated the risk of
'contracting AIDS for potential /
donors.
Brandon's spirits are high,
said his father, despite frequent'
trips to the hospital for blood
transfusions. "Brandon probably
thinks that going to the hospital
three times •a week is done by
everyone," said Weiss. "He's
been doing it since he was about
three months old."
Brandon was not at the press
conference because of the risk of
infection, but• met with photo-
graphers afterwards in hiS
Southfield home. Meanwhile, his
father is looking for help in fun-
draising, organizing, donor test-
ing, and .AB+ blood transfu-
sions. To help, call Arthur Weiss
day or night, 855-5888.
