A Plan To Expand

The organizers of the Bayit
Project have no immediate
plans to open a Bayit in .
Michigan but . say that they ,.
hope to explore the possibil-
ity in the near future. "We'd
like to have 150 of them in
the next few years," says di-
rector David Paller from his
Los Angeles office, "wherever
there's strong Jewish life on
campus." -
An attempt was made to
organize a Bayit at the Uni-
versity of Michigan last fall,
but because of a late start
and other factors, it failed.
Another' effort will be made'
next year.
The project organizers see
their work as not only a
means of maintaining Jewish
life and creativity on campus
but also as a way of develop-
ing a core of future Jewish
leaders. Though the organiz-
ers cite their strong ties to
the Hillel campus program
and point out that most of
the students who live in a
campus Bayit are also active
in Hillel, they say that the
Hillel model differs for the
most part because it has a
rabbi and/or program director
playing the parental role.

tivities, preparing and lead-
ing a' Shabbat service, shar-
ing the workload in the Bayit,
and participating in at least
one Bayit educational activi-
ty and community event a
month.
The Project organizers
maintain that they are pro-
moting the development of a
national network of Jewish
Students through its advisory
board, annual conference and
Israel trip. They add that
their research has shown that
the majority of students who
have lived in a Bayit have
"emerged more knowledge-,
able, more involved, and more
proud to be a Jew than they
otherwise would have been
had there not been a Bayit
during those crucial transi-
tional college years."
' Although the Project was
formed in 1981, last year was
the first that it had its pre-
sent non-profit status and
operational structure. Paller
said it was "a fantastic suc-
cess" and that applicants had
to be turned away due to a
lack of space. (Bayit living

Those who have experienced
the Bayit have emerged from
their college years fuller
human beings, Jewish per-

joys and ambitions of four
millenia of our tradition.
