Joseph Shapiro, former con-
tributor of poetry to The Jewish
News, will celebrate his 95th
birthday on Oct. 25.
Born in England, Shapiro
came to the United States at
age 19. He was stationed) in
France during World War I, and
received the Purple Heart for
wounds sustained in action. He
also served during World War
II. He is affiliated with the
Jewish War Veterans.
A tool and die maker, Shapiro
worked for Ford Motor Co. for
37 years, retiring in 1955 at age
65.
He includes writing poetry
and singing among his hobbies,
and is a former member of
Cong. Beth Moses. He also is
affiliated with the Independent
Detroit Lodge.
He is the father of Abe Shap-
iro and Lillain Levy and the
late Ethel Shapiro. Wife Clara
died in 1976. Shapiro has four
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild.
A family celebration at Bor-
man Hall is planned.

At Scout Event

The Jewish Relationships
Committee of the Detroit Area
Council of the Boy Scouts of
America will' sponsor a Sabbath
service -at 7:30 p.m. today at the
Scouts Diamond Jubilee Ex-
travaganza at Willow Met-
ropark.
Services will be conducted by
Jerry Isler of Cong. Beth
Shalom.
On Saturday, the various reli-
gious relationship committees,
including the Jewish Relation-
ships Committee, will exhibit
articles dealing with the reli-
gious aspects of scouting.
The Jewish Relationships
Committee is chaired by Robert
Rosenfeld, a past president of
Cong. Beth Shalom and a
member of the Community Serv-
ices Division of the Jewish- Wel-
fare Federation. Its members in-
clude Wayne Feinstein, the
executive vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation; Dr.
Morton Plotnick, the executive
director of the Jewish Commu-
nity Center; and Rabbi David
Nelson, the spiritual leader of
Cong. Beth Shalom.
