Miriam Gitelman will share
her bat mitzvah with a Soviet
Jewish girl in abstentia at a
melave malka celebration
Saturday evening.
Miriam will share her special
day with Yulia Ginis of Moscow:
Yulia is the daughter of Boris
and Irina Ginis, who have been
denied exit visas from the
U.S.S.R. Since 1979 on the pre-
text that Ginis has knowledge of
"state secrets" due to his former
employment as a computer
engineer.
Mrs. Ginis, currently expect-
hig the couples' fourth child, is a
medical research technician.
Both she and her husband have
been unable to work at their
chosen professions since apply-
ing for emigration. Ginis also
had to terminate research that
he was doing in preparation for
a doctoral degree.
The Ginises have participated
in religious study groups and
are among the Moscow Jews
who, in spite of harassment by
the authorities, have managed
to learn Hebrew.
Miriam is the daughter of Dr.
& Mrs. Zvi Gitelman, members
of Young Israel of Southfield.
