MAGIC FOR ALL OCCASIONS
CHILDREN & ADULT PARTIES -

The Shaarey Zedek Adult
Education Program will begin
its Institute for Adult Jewish
Studies at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
synagogue. Succeeding programs
will be on Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19
and Dec. 3.
The program will include
courses in modern Jewish his-
tory, taught by Dr. Sidney Bob
kosky of. the University of
Michigan-Dearborn; and an in- .
troduCtion to the Talmud,
taught by Rabbi Louis Finkel-
man, director • of the Hillel
Foundation at Wayne State
University.
Dr. Alexander Ullmann will
teach a course in the Hebrew of
the prayerbook, and Rabbi Irwin
Groner will teach, "Issues in
Jewish Belief." Rabbi Kenneth
Cohen will conduct a class on
the Bible, and Marvin Kasoff
will 1?e the instructor for "Cults,
Sects and Schisms."
Ilene Chait is the adult
studies committee chairman.
Co-chairmen are Sharon Brown,
Bea Katzman and Dr. Ullmann.
Committee members are Selma
Snider Schwartz, Elizabeth
Tam, Linda. Weingarten, Shel-
don Winkelman and Dr. Richard
Zirkin. Rabbi Groner is the ad-
viser, and Rabbi Cohen, director
of the institute.
The institute is endowed by
the Ivan and Linda .Bloch Heri-
tage Fund of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.

Balalaika Concert
At Shaarey Zedek

The Balalaika Orchestra of
Detioit will perform at 2 p.m.
Nov. 3 at Cong. Shaarey, Zedek.
William Goldes, musical di-
rector and prima balalaika, is a
second generation orchestra
member. His father was among
the Russian refugees who
founded the orchestra-in 1926.
The group will be joined -by
guest artist, Gary Nova from
New York. Born in Kirovograd,
Russia, Nova came to the
United States as a youngster in
1949. He gained most of his
early experience by participat-
ing in many off-Broadway prod-
uctions. He began his profes-
sional career at the famous Two
Guitars Russian nightclub in
New York and continues as a
popular Russian singer on the
East Coast.
The other orchestra members
are: Hecky Kasle, prima domra;
Irene Perloff, mezzo-soprano
doznra; George Omelianoff, alto.
domra; Joseph Lucido, secunda
balalaika; Manya Lodico, tenor
domra; Ray 'Kane; bass domra;
James Loss, . bass balalaika;
Marvin , Brode, kontrabass
balalaika; Olga Omelianoff,
piano; and musical director
Goldes, prima balalaika.
