Both Secretary of State George Shultz and Israeli De- puty Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir put their opposing cases before members of Congress last Thursday. Meanwhile, oppo- . nents of the sale in both the House of Representatives and the Senate were collecting sig- natures for what they hope will ultimately turn into a Congres- sional veto of the arms package if the Administration refuses to back down. President Reagan gave Cod- - gress informal notice last month of his intent to sell Jordan an arms package that includes 40 F-16 or F-20 jet fighters; 300 Aim-9P-4 air-to-air missiles; 12 improved Hawk anti-aircraft missiles with 36 reloads; and 32 Bradley fighting vehicles. The Arms Export Control Act provides for a 20-day informal notification period, after which formal notification can be made to Congress, which then has 30 days in which it can veto the sale. Senate Democratic Whip Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) said at a press conference at the end of September that Reagan "faces almost certain defeat" in his plan to sell the weapons to Jor- dan. Terror Cell Wiped Out Tel Aviv (JTA) — Four mem- bers of a terrorist gang which had been operating in the Jerusalem hills for nearly two years were killed and a fifth wounded in a shoot-out with members of the special border police anti-terrorist unit last week. The gang was cornered near Hebron. The commander of the Israel Defense Force, Central Com- mand, Maj. General Amnon Shahak, said the area is now clear of terrorists. Nevertheless, he cautioned hikers and cam- pers to take their excursions in the area in groups, not singly nor in pairs, and to go arnied. The captured gang members were believed responsible for a number of attacks, murdering five Israelis. These include Edna Harari, 22, and Mordechai Suissa, 24, whose bullet-riddled bodies were found Oct. 5 after extensive searches. Meanwhile, a gas explosion that killed two women in the Katamon quarter in south Jerusalem last- Tuesday triggered an outburst of anti- Arab fury among residents of the slum neighborhood who thought it was a. terrorist bomb. 'flka Schwartz, who lived in a flat directly aboVe the blast, was killed instantly. The second woman, Maria Hymovitz, 76, died later in a hospital. Ten other persons, including Schwartz's husband, were in- jured by the blast that wrecked six apartments. Municipal authorities have arranged hotel accommodations for those • ren- dered homeless. . DECEMBER 22-30 ABC LIMOUSINE SERVICE Robert Kasten (R-Wis.) — have enlisted substantial bi-partisan support for a resolution disap- proving the sale. By the end of last month, the Senators said they had over 70 signatures. In addition, a "dear colleague" letter co-sponsored by 12 Repre- sentatives, including Dante Fas- cell (D-Fl.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Commit- tee, and Larry Smith (D-Fl.), began circulating in the House at the beginning of this month. Reps. James Florio (D-N.J.) and Norman Lent (R-N.Y.) have enlisted_ 76 co-sponsors for a sense of the congress resolution opposing the sale until Jordan negotiated with Israel. The Administration has given no indication so far that it will be deterred by the strong oppo- sition it faces in Congress over the arms package. To the con- trary, Shultz made it clear in a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee ' last Thursday that the President would press ahead on schedule, in spite of requests that he post- pone the debate for at least an- other five months, pending de- velopments in the Mideast peace process. 043 '45 BERKLEY TOURS & IRAN EL 559-8620
