anon. The arrest and transfer
of the Shia Muslims from the
Ansar detention camp to
Atalit in Israel for their
safety and security is in keep-
ing with Israeli law and
arguably in accord with inter-
national law. The beatings,
murder and terrorizing of the
American passengers are
unarguably illegal. The
Shiites were arrested and de-
tained on charges of shelter-
ing the guerrilla enemies and
joining them in their assault
on the Israel Defense Forces,
the American passengers
were totally innocent if any
involvement in the Lebanese
wars.
It is tempting to simplify
events, motives, behavior, to
dump it all into one neatly
packaged category. It is tan-
talizing to pronounce simple
apodictic judgements. But
wisdom whispers
Whitehead's cautionary ad-
vice — "Seek simplicity —
and suspect it."
The sound of absolutes
makes for stirring rhetoric.
The swashbuckling dema-
gogic of "never" and "al-
ways" parry all reasonable
doubts. As we grow closer to
the limited options in real life
situations, we learn the folly
and arrogance of such sweep-
ing declarations. Not all
forms of negotiation are
capitulations; not every ex-
change is betrayal of prin-
ciple. In life situations multi-
ple moral principles come to
play. The most difficult
ethical decisions forced upon
us are not in choosing good
over evil, but in the need,to
fujjudicate between two or
more contending good prin-
ciples.
The Israeli release of 1150
terrorists inexchange for the
release of tOw Israeli sol-
diers involved•a collision of et
least two values. The first one
was to give no quarter 'to con-
victed terrorists; the second
was to move heaven and
earth to free Israeli soldiers
from their enemy captors
known for their cruelty. To
recognize situational distinc-
tions is not to surrender to a
capricious relativistic ethics.
It is to recognize the com-
plexity of live situations and
the limitations of inflexible
absolutistic postures.
Under siege, faced with
public humiliation, not a few
commentators regressed to
the shell of infantile wishes of
omnipotence. Right-wing
elements taunted the Presi-
dent for his restraint, refer-
ring to him as a "crippled
hawk," wished a Rambo ethic
of spray. bombing, reducing
the Beirut airport to ashes,
ordering an Entebbe rescue
or Marine invasion of Leba-
non. Absolutists grow impa-
tient with the counsel to ex-
