The Reverend
President in '88?
It's more than three years un-
til the next Presidential election,
but it's not too early for those
who fear the Religious Right
(and that ought to include
almost all Jews) to start worry-
ing about the plansalready be-
ing made to put a handsome,
charismatic, highly persuasive,
born-again Christian preacher in
the White House. .
Several weeks ago, when the
report spread that. Pat
Robertson, the television
evangelist, is considering run-
ning in 1988, an editorial de-
clared that the news had sent a
shiver down the spines of Re-
publican strategists and that
"Democrats, Republicans, inde-
pendents, gentiles, Jews and
non-believers" should all be
troubled by "the growing influ-
ence of the fundamentalist right
in politics."
In this column I would like to
explain why I think Jews espec-
ially should be wary of Robert-
son's ambition to be President.
First, a few facts about- this
prospective candidate. He is 66
years old but has the energy, zip
and bounce of a college boy.
While Ronald Reagan was once
fit to play cowboy roles in
Hollywood, Robertson is still
Photogenic enough to play the
male lead in Dynasty. In the
past 25 years he has-acquired
and developed 600 acres of
prime property in Virginia
Beach, one of the fastest grow-
ing parts of the country. There
he has built a $22 million broad-
cast center, a $13 million
library, a university that gives
out masters degrees to thou-
sands a year, and a $13 million
outreach building. His cash flow
is put at $230 million a year.
The political base that Robert-
son has at the start is his so-
called 700 Club, a television
show that he claims reaches in-
to nearly 71/2 million households
a week. That means he is in in-
timate touch, weekly, with more
than 20 million voters. One of
his assistants on the air is a
former Black Muslim. His father
was a Congressman.
In addition to praying to God
to help him win his political
plans, Robertson, in preparation
for his campaign-, has purchased
a 24 seat Jet aircraft and has
developed strong ties with
Washington-based New Right
leaclerS, such as Richard Viguerie,
the man who works miracles
with, his direct-by-mail tricks. -
Now let me tell you what I
know about Robertson. Last
April a debate was scheduled at
Washington Hebrew Congrega-
tion between the Moral Majority
leader, Jerry Falwell, and Rabbi
Alexander Schindler, the Jewish
leader. A few hours before the
scheduled time Falwell phoned
in sick and Robertson was pro-
duced as the pinch-hitter.
My wife and I were among the
1,800 in the audience, a vast ma--
jority Jews. .Robertson was
given the opening 38 minutes.

humor, Robertson within a few
minutes had most of his listen-
ers under his spell. He was fre-
quently interrupted by hand
clapping and at the conclusion
of his "sermon" he was given
rousing applause. He had his
audience so mesmerized that no
one seemed to notice his incon-
sistencies and contradictions.
For example, at one point he
insisted that unlike Falwell and
his Fundamentalists, he, Robert-
son, and other evangelists never
mix in politics. Yet a few min-
utes later he claimed that he and
his associates are doing as much
for Israel, politically, as AIPAC.
He pretended not to be pros-
elytizing, but in the spirit of
Robertson's political
base starts with his
700 Club TV show,
which reaches 7.5 •
million households
weekly.
"Let's all be friends together"
he said that Jews believe in the
eventual coming of the Messiah
and Christians believe in the
eventual coming of their
Messiah and the only difference
the implied) is that the Chris-
tians know the name of their
Messiah, while the Jewish Mes-
siah is still anonymous, and so,
because there is so little differ-
ence between us, why shouldn't
we all get together. Of course,
"getting together" to the
evangelicals means conversion
to the brand of Christianity.
I was so disturbed by the reac-
tion of the 1,800 men and
women in the audience that a
week or two later I did a talk to
the National Council of Jewish
Women on the subject: "Are the
Jews Being Taken In the by
Religious Right?"
Now that Robertson has made
it clear that if, in answer to his
prayers, he gets the go-ahead
from the Almighty he will run
for the Presidency, I take pen in
hand to warn that the ambitions
of this slick proselytizer-
propagandist-evangelist ought
to be of great concern to the
Jewish community - as well as
to a lot of others of us - even this
long before November, - 1988.

Raid Deplored ,
New York (JTA) — A former
counsel to President Jimmy
Carter, Lloyd Cutler, wrote in'
the New York Times last week
that the Israeli air ,raid on the
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion headquarters in Tunis Oct.
1 cannot be condoned.
"Hunt and kill is a principle
we totally reject in our own con-
stitution and . legal system. It is
a principle we would never
allow any other nation to follow
on our territory," Cutler con-
tended.
