Campaign Has
New Women's Unit

Major givers to the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation Women's Di-
vision have been invited to be-
come charter members of the Lion
of Judah section of the 1986 Allied
Jewish Campaign.
The first fund raiser, hosted by
Linda Goldman of Bloomfield
Hills, will take place at noon
Thursday for contributors of
$5,000 and $10,000.
Harriet Zimmerman, president
and past national chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal National
Women's Division, will be keyn-
ote speaker.
Zimmerman, who served as
Women's Division campaign
chairman in Atlanta, serves on
the boards of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee, the American
Jewish Historical Society and the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
A delegate to the Jewish
Agency Assembly in Israel, she is
also a national officer of the
American Israel Public Affairs
Committee.
Barbara Berry is chairman of
the Advance Gifts Section of the
Lion of Judah Committee. Beth
Lowenstein is associate chair-
man. Penny Blumenstein is
chairman of the Special Gifts Sec-
tion.

First Monday Group
To Hear Professor

The Jewish Welfare Federation
Women's Division will kick off its
"First Monday Group" series at
8:45 a.m. Monday at the main
United Hebrew Schools Building
in Southfield with a focus on
"Spotting Trouble."
Dr. Robert G. Newby, professor
of sociology at Wayne State Uni-
versity, will lead the first group
with a discussion on South Africa.
All forums will be held from 8:45
to 10:15 a.m.
Newby, who received a Ph.D.
degree from Stanford University,
has done extensive research on
South Africa and written many
articles on racial balance and de-
segration.
There is no charge, but reserva-
tions are required for the series
and for individual programs.
Helen Shevin is chairman of the
Women's Division social aware-
ness committee; Beverly Baker is
associate chairman. For informa-

Run, Hike, Bike,
For Diabetes

The American Diabetes
Association-Michigan Affiliate
will hold four fund-raising events
for people who enjoy running, hik-
ing, biking, or jogging.
Money raised from the "Day of
Fun" activities will help support
programs and services for chil-
dren and adults who have diab-
etes. Prizes will be awarded.
The events will be at Belle Isle
Park, Saturday at 10 a.m.; and
Gallup Park Trail, Ann Arbor,
Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.
