Debra don't have a car; and
they feel it is unnecessary in
Jerusalem.
"What we save on car ex-
penses, we put towards the
occasional taxi if-we need it,"
says Sam. But they do go
away on day trips with the
children, however — those
run by organizations such as
Emunah or Young Israel.
Joel does the odd jobs
around the home, and he
bakes the occasional cake,
too. He has also started to do
the family's dressmaking.
For his part, Sam barters
— he'll do a paint job or make
a wall closet and pay a little
less for health care in return.
"There's no tax on that — the
government hasn't found a
way to tax bartering...yet."
As new arrivals, how are
they making out? Not as bad
as Sam expected — in fact, he
expected the economic ceiling
to fall in two years ago. In-
stead, he and Joel both got
jobs in Jerusalem, which they
had not anticipated.
For Joel, though, the situa-
tion is worse than he ex-
pected: "I thought I would be
paid about half of what I was
making in the States; instead
I get about one fifth."
So how do they survive?
No red meat. Chicken once
or twice a week. Cutting
down on use of the car. Mak-
ing clothes for the family.
Debra: "We eat meat less.
And I had to watch my gro-
cery bills in the States also."
Rhonda: "For me, it's a
very big compromise not hav-
ing the clothes I want, not
having the red meat to eat.
And I miss the entertain-
ment, going out." ❑

`Eye For Eye'
Response Hit

New York — Ann Landers,
who advises and often chides
readers of her widely-syndicated
newspaper column, was herself
admonished last week by the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations for "unwittingly
perpetuating a myth that has
been used to justify persecution
of Jews for the last 2,000 years."
What sparked the concern of
the Reform Judaism movement
was Miss Landers's response to
a reader that ended thus: "Al-
though the Old Testament says
`An eye for an eye,' 1 prefer the
New Testament's 'Turn the
other cheek."
Annette Damn, coordinator of
the UAHC's department of
interreligious affairs, voiced her
reproach in letter to the colum-
nist observing that "no biblical
passage has been more misun-
derstood than 'an eye for an
eye.'
"Christian and Jewish schol-
ars igree that the phrase is not
to be taken literally but actually
reflects an advanced humane
system of monetary compensa-
tion-for the loss sustained."
