United States Revokes
Kahane's Citizenship ,

Washington (JTA) — Meir
Kahane, the Brooklyn-born
rabbi who emigrated to Israel 14
years ago and is now the repre-
sentative of the extremist Kach
Party in the Knesset, has been
stripped of his American citizen-
ship. He had held dual citizen-
ship.
According to the State De-
partment, which made the an-
nouncement Friday, a certificate
of loss of nationality for Rabbi
Kahane was issued last Wednes-
day. The document said Rabbi
Kahane had withdrawn himself
from -cit:izenshity-as of Aug. 13,
1984, by assuming his seat in
the Knesset.
James Callahan, a State De-
partment spokesman, said Rabbi
Kahane's loss of citizenship was
sealed Sept. 12 when he told a
National Press Club audience
that he retained his U.S. citizen-
ship to avoid the necessity of ob-
taining a visa when he wished to
visit the U.S.
The State Department said
that Kahane "is free to apply for
a visa to visit the United States
as an Israeli citizen, but we can-
not speculate on the outcome of a
future application."
United States immigration
laws state that serving in the
armed forces of a foreign country
or holding high office in a
foreign government may result
in the loss of nationality. The
laws, however, also provide for a
number of exceptions that can be

keeping with her policy of non-
negotiation with terrorists.

On Tuesday, following the un-
confirmed reports of the two kil-
lings, a U.S. Sixth Fleet ship
sailed towards the hijacked ves-
sel. The Pentagon reported that

In Israel, the Knesset on July
31 moved against Rabbi Kahane
by banning from future elections
any political party that advo-
cates racism and required MKs
to relinquish non-Israeli citizen-
ship. The law is to take effect
later this fall.
Rabbi Kahane, who is the
leader of th Kach Party, advo-

Israelis Had Warned
Cruise Ship Nations

Staff Report
Washington — The Los Angeles
Times reported Wednesday that
Israel had warned several Euro-
pean countries in recent months
— including Italy — about the
possibility of a cruise ship being
hijacked by terrorists. The report
said that Norway was also warned
because President Reagan's
daughter, Maureen was
scheduled to take a cruise aboard
a Norwegian ship'
As four Palestinian terrorists
who hijacked an Italian liner sur-
rendered in Egypt on Wednesday, '
there were cbifflictifig reports
about casualties among the 400
hostages aboard the ship. Reports
that an American Jewish couple
were killed were later called false.
On Wednesday, later reports said
another passenger was killed by
the terrorists.
The four hijackers were mem-
bers of the Palestine Liberation
Front, a dissident group which
has splintered off from the PLO.
They were demanding the release
,of some, 50 Palestinians from Is-
raeli prisons in exchange for the
hostages' safety, a xequest which
Israel refused to acknowledge' in

25 Sixth Fleet ships are presently
in eastern Mediterranean waters.
Of the roughly 400 hostages re-
leased Wednesday, more than 300
were crew members who were
mostly Italian. The remaining
hostages included passengers
from more than a dozen countries,
although no Israelis were re-
ported aboard the ship. The bulk
of the Achille Lauro's 680
passengers were ashore on sight-
seeing excursions in Alexandria
and Port Said when the hijackers
took over the ship Monday.
State Department spokesman
Bernard Kalb expressed relief
Wednesday over the non-violent
conclusion to the incident and de-
plored "the cycle of violence that
continues against innocent vic-
tims."
In Israel, Prime Minister Shi-
mon Peres accused the hijackers
of trying to sabotage peace efforts
in the Middle East. He said Israel
would never bow to terrorism.
