One of the most dramatic episodes in Jewish history is de- picted in Ozeri's very impressive and beautifully illustrated vol- ume. His photographs in them- selves are important enough to form a part of the Israeli rescue tasks. The story by the Yeme- nite blacksmith's son is a chap- ter in the history of Israel's re- demption and resettlement of the oppressed. Related in Yemenite Jews is the story of the persecutions, of a dream revived that drew the Yemenites to the Holy Land, the excitement that was created when the redemption of Israel became known in the period of the rebirth of the Jewish state. The national spirit was aroused. They became aware that their years of agony were coming to an end. It was the miracle of their life that led them to the Operation Magic Carpet, so much so that, as the author of this pictorial volume states, "The' Imam of Yemen, possibly interpreting Is- rael's military victories in 1948 as a sign from God, gave the Jews permission to emigrate." That's when the migration began from Aden for nearly all the Yemenite Jews, as part of a modern Magic Carpet. They sac- rificed their belongings in Yemen. It was their "return to Zion." The road was dangerous, some dying along the way, yet the nearly 50,000 were airlifted and a prophecy was fulfilled. The dramatic story is fascinat- ingly recounted in Ozeri's pref- ace, in which he reviews the Yemenite Jews' history.
