Gay Tierney of Rome, Italy; and
one granddaughter.

LOUIS GOLDBERG, 87, died
Sept. 27. He leaves his wife,
Sarah; a brother, Fred Title of
Ohio; and a sister, Eleanor
Hirsh of Ohio.

SAMUEL "SAM" GOODMAN,
76, died Sept. 30. He leaves his
wife, Cele; two daughters, Mrs.
Arthur (Andrea) Harris of North
Hollywood, Calif., and Brenda
Sue; a brother, Saul of New
York; a sister, Mrs. Shirley
Eberson of New York; and two
grandchildren.

MILDRED SMITH HERSH,
89, of Berkley, died Sept. 29.
Survived by a son, Ralph Smith;
a sister, Esther Callens of
California; and two
grandchildren.

JOSEPH W. KATZ, 76, of De-
troit, died Sept. 25. Survived by
a son, Aaron; a daughter, Addie;

Esther Eilander

Esther Eilander, a member of
Cong. B'nai Israel and its sis-
terhood, died Sept. 25 at age 77.
Born in Russia, Mrs. Eilander
lived 75 years in Detroit. She
was a long-time volunteer at
Pontiac General Hospital.
She leaves a son, Dr. Marvin;
two daughters, Edith of Boulder,
Colo., and Janet; a brother, Alex
Elbling; three grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Charles Richter

Pasadena, Calif. — Charles F.
Richter, the seismologist who
helped develop the Richter scale
to measure earthquake power, is
dead at age 85.
Mr. Richter developed his
scale with Beno Gutenberg in
1935.

MAURICE M. MILLER, 67,
former Detroiter of Pompano
Beach, Fla., died Sept. 29. Sur-
vived by his wife, Isabel; a
daughter, Mrs. Marcy Josephs of
Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers,
Mac of Tamarac, Fla., Ben and
John, both of Detroit; and a sis-
ter, Rose Walsh of New York.

80, of Detroit, died Sept. 27.

Oak Park, died Oct. 1. Survived

ANN RIVES, 66, of Southfield,
died Sept. 30. Survived by a son,

ESTHER SANDLER, 79, of
Oak Park, died Sept. 25. Sur-
vived by her husband, Joseph;
