'Goldene Medina'
Theme Of Concert

"Die Goldene Medina," an
evening of musical nostalgia, is
planned by Cantor Harold Or-
bach for Temple Israel's annual
Mildred S. Steinberg-Andrew
Chalat Memorial Concert.
The program, which traces the
opportunities that America has
offered immigrants over the
years, will take place on Oct. 13,
at 7:30 p.m. at the temple.
The participants include Can-
tor Boris Kazansky and his wife,
Lilia, now of Philadelphia, im-
migrants from Russia; and sop-
rano Roslyn Barak, who enjoys
freedom of opportunity in the
Reform movement, pursuing her
career as a student cantor.
Cantor Orbach himself was
born in Germany, and came to
the U.S. with his family, just es-
caping the Nazis in 1938.
Cantor Kazansky emigrated
from the Soviet Union in 1978.
He performed extensively on the
concert stage before enteritit
Hebrew Union College School of
Sacred Music. He presently
serves as cantor of Philadel-
phia's Rodeph Shalom
Synagogue. Mrs. Kazansky was
born in Moscow, and began her
studies at age 5 in the Moscow
Conservatory. She continues her
career with her husband as a
pianists, singer and cantorial
soloist.
Barak, born in New York,
attended the High School of
Music and Art and•the Manhat-
tan School of Music ,vhere she
performed major operatic roles
and was a featured soloist.
She made her Carnegie Hall
debut in 1971 as soloist with the
Youth Symphony of New York,
and won a number of major
competitions. Currently student
cantor at Temple Isaiah in. For-
est Hills, N.Y., Barak lived in
Israel for three years and made
many concert appearances, in-
cluding those with the Israel
National Opera the Jerusalem
Symphony and the Israel
Chamber Ensemble.
"Die Goldene Medina" is made
possible by Myron Steinberg and
Dr. and Mrs. Ned Chalat, who
have created the concert in
memory of Mildred S. Steinberg
and Andrew Chalat, their wife
and mother, son and grandson.
Tickets are available at the
office of Temple Israel, 661-
