I would not enter completely
into it, but at least I now could
stand at the gate.
Reb Yosef Moshe was getting
tired, and I stood up to leave.
Menachem was going too. We
walked through the courtyard
together, but soon I fell a few
Ateps behind; I was still weighed
down by my bundle of books. Ai
the hemp began to cut into my
hand again, I wondered silently
if I hadn't taken on too much, If
I would really continue to lern
from all these volumes after this
day. Menachem led me out of
the streets of his world as if he
knew that I could not and would
not stay there. He said nothing
and looked straight ahead, but
he walked slowly enough so that
I could just about keep up with
him. With Menachem in front,
we crossed Mea Shearim Street
and climbed a few steps that
took us into a maze of alleys
which in turn opened into a
narrow and deserted passage
that wound its way around the
back row of houses. Turning a
corner, we suddenly found our-
selves near the end of the lane
and just short of the center of
town. Menachem stopped, as if
he were approaching some invis-
ible border. Instinctively, I stop-
ped too.
For the first time since we
had left his father's house he
turned toward me. He looked
into my eyes and spoke to me as
if he had been reading my
thoughts, and as though I knew
he ha 4. As he spoke, his voice
solemnly quiet, I felt as if he
were at once pleased by my pro-
gress and wary of it.
"A scholar once came to a
great rebbe. The scholar was no
longer young — he was close to
thirty — but he had never be-
fore visited a rebbe. 'What have
you done all your Life?, the
rebbe asked him. 'I have gone
through the whole of the Tal-
mud three times,' the learned
man answered. 'Yes,' the rebbe
replied, and then inquired, 'but
how much of the Talmud has
gone through you?"
Menachem paused 'and then
stretched out his hand to shake
mine. He had never touched me
before. "According to the effort
is the reward," he said, and
walked away. ❑

New York — For the first
time, Conservative Judaism has
established a 14-member Com-
mission on Ideology to explore
the spectrum of Conservative
Jewish theology and, where
possible, to develop a consensus
on ethical and social questions.
The 14-member commission
includes Rabbi Harold Schul-
Weis of Encino, Calf., a con-
tributing editor to The Jewish
News; and Rabbi Howard
Addis'on of Chicago, former di-
rector of the Hillel Foundation
at Wayne State University in
Detroit.
