A Solution For Egypt's Plight The International Monetary Fund has warned Egypt that its balance of payments position is facing seribus deterioration. Her foreign debt is over $31 billion (plus $3 billion she owes to Rus- sia.) Her economic plight prevails despite profits from: the Sinai oil and other assets taken from Israel; tolls from Suez Canal; pay sent in by thousands of Egyptians working in foreign countries; exports of oil, cotton, etc. tourism. Consider Egypt's excessive military purchases (guns — not butter, a policy which might set off food riots again); the notori- ous inefficiency and corruption of officials; the 80 percent illit- eracy; the refusal to cope adequately with a population explosion. As for the boycott by hostile Arab countries, the effects would be minimal if Egypt ful- filled the Camp David accords which prescribed trade and tourism with Israel. Moreover, the skills of Israel scientists and technicians could radically' im- prove Egypt's economy. But Egypt kowtows to Israel's enemies who hamper her by threats of serious harm if she ignores demands to stop dealing with Israel.
