The annual BBYO Kickoff
Dance will be held Saturday at
8:30 p.m. at Southfield-Lathrup
High School. All Jewish youth
ages 14-18 or in grades nine-12
are invited. Admission is free to
all nationally-registered mem-
bers of AZA and BBG. There is
a nominal charge for non-
members and for prospective
members.
BBYO's fall conclave will be
held' Oct. 25-27 at Camp Maas.
Benny Schwarz, shaliach to the
Detroit Jewish community, will
be featured at the conclave in a
tour of Israel program and in an
Arab-Israeli dialogue program.
Applications for the conclave are
available from chapter
presidents or from the BBYO
office. Deadline for application
is Oct. 14. Overall coordinators
are Eric Kahan of Akiba AZA
and Julie Knoll of Savage BBG.
Michigan Region BBYO re-
ceived 28 group and individual
awards at the recent BBYO In-
ternational Convention held at
the B'nai B'rith Perlman Camp
in Starlight, Pa.
Nine AZA and BBG chapters
received recognition as "best
all-around chapters." Recipients
of the Henry Monsky Award
were Louis D. Brandeis AZA, Al
Jolson AZA, Kishon AZA,
Ronald L. Posen AZA and Gen.
Maurice Rose AZA. Recipients
of the Miriam Albert Award
were Benjamin Disraeli BBG,
Dora Savage BBG, Shoshanna
BBG and Yachad BBG,
Windsor.
First place went to Steve Jas-
gur of Goode AZA in the Sidney
Kuswom Sermon Writing Con-
test and Shoshanna BBG in the
International BBG Newspaper
Contest. Second place went to
Julie Stein of Machar BBG in
Storytelling; Hilary Olson of
Machar BBG in Handicrafts;
and Michigan Region BBG for
second highest donation fo the
BBYO International Service
Fund.
Michigan Region chapters also
won five program of the year
awards. Fret place went to
Posen AZA in the category of
community service for its work
with the Special Olympics; to
Yachad BBG in community
service for its Purim program at
the senior citizens building in
Windsor; to Brandeis AZA and
Machar BBG for their weekend
at the Milan Conference Centre
on the topic of thought control
(cultural /social action); and to
Samson AZA and Shoshanna
BBG in social /creativity for its
Milan weekend on the topic of
values. Second place went to
Glazer BBG in the category of
sisterhood for their mother-
daughter-founding member
luncheon.
Nine Michigan BBYOers re-
ceived outstanding membership
recruitment awards. Receiving
the Tree of Life Award were:
Brian Shapiro, Brandeis AZA;
Steve Jasgur, Goode AZA; Adam
Larky, King AZA; David Bussell
and Randy Novak, L'Chaim
AZA; and Jon Gorman and Scott
Taub, Posen AZA. Receiving the
Eternal Light Award were: De-
bbie Friedman, Shemesh BBG;
and ,Lisa Velick, Shoshanna
