t THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS SYNAGOGUE Services Honors Soviet Jewry Cong. Beth Shalom will have a special Simchat Torah service at 7 p.m. Monday. The first Hakafah (procession with the Sifrei Torah) will use a Torah from the Soviet Union. This Hakafah will be dedicated to Soviet Jews in general and to the congregation's adopted Soviet Jewish family, the Leonid Volvovsky family, in particular. This procession will begin in the Main Sanctuary and then proceed outside, where the youth of the synagogue will tie blue and white ribbons around the trees as a visual, constant reminder of the suffering of the Volvovsky family for the past 11 years, since they first applied for repartriation to Israel. Leonid is 42 years old, his wife Mile is 40 and their daughter Kira is 17. This family applied for repar- triation to Israel in June of 1974. Since that time they have been harassed regularly by the KGB. They are observant Jews. Leonid taught himself Hebrew and then began teaching others in Moscow, where they lived be- fore they were banished to Gorky in 1980. Two months ago Volvovsky was arrested. He is a cyberneticist, but has not been allowed td practice his profession since he applied to repatriate to Israel. He was elected a member of the New York Academy of Science. In 1980 he was granted Israeli citi- zenship. Mrs. Volvosky has found an attorney in Moscow who is will- ing to defend her husband, but he canot travel to Gorky, be- cause it is a closed city. She wants to defend her husband, but she was not given permis- sion tO—do– that, because the prosecution wants to use her as a witness. Livonia Honors Member Couple Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lew- kowicz will be the guests of honor at the Livonia Jewish Congregation's annual Chai Dinner to be held at the syna- gogue on Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The Lewkowiczes are founding members of the synagogue and have participated in its mainte- nance for all of its 26 years. An honorarium fund has been established in the name of Mr. and Mrs. Lewko. wicz.
