several times a week I came
into the bank, we would carry
on a brief conversation — more
than pleasantries but nothing of
much consequence: just enough
to allow for a feeling of
camaraderie to grow between
us.
Today, as he counted out my
change, he looked up and re-
marked: "You know, I've never
asked you what brought you to
Jerusalem."
I mumbled something about

lernen.

"Oh, you want to go to a

yeshiva."

"No, I explained, I wasn't
really interested in reviewing
Torah in the rarefied atmos-
phere of the yeshiva. The inten-
sity and insularity of that life
was too much for me. Instead, I
wanted to join with. Jews like
him who review texts in the
flow of their normal lives.
"You mean the people in the
bes medresh?" [house of Jewish
study] he asked.
"Exactly."
"Well, I have a place for yoii."
His eyebrows bobbed as he
spoke. "You'll feel right at
home."
"Where?" "Right around the
corner. I daven there. Why don't
you come Tuesday night to our
regular class? You'll see what I
mean."
The line of people waiting for
money was getting longer, but
their patience was not. This was
not a time to ask for details.
"Where do you live?" Ian
asked. I told him.
"Meet me in front of your
house at a quarter to eight
Tuesday night. I'll take you
there."
"You won't forget?"
"Don't worry, just don't you
forget to be there, because the
rabbi likes to start on time."
I left the bank with a sense' of
excitement. Ian was like me —
a modern man — and I was
going to lern with him. This was
not going to be another excur-
sion into distant worlds. Per-
haps at last I might be on my
way. -
On Tuesday evening I stood
on the street in front of my
apartment, waiting for my
friends. He arrived on time, and
I squeezed into his tiny Fiat, the
sort that looks as if it could
make a U-turn in a phone
booth. We drove no more than
five minutes before we got to a
synagogue called Heichal
Baruch --- the sanctuary of
Baruch.
"The building we're going to,"
Ian explained, pointing to the
little alley ahead of us into
which we walked, "used to be a
British officers' but during the
period of the Mandate, In 1948,
Shlomo — you'll meet him in a
minute — led a battalion that
took over control of-it. After the
war, he persuaded the govern-
ment to let him make the hut
into a synagogue. Since then
he's made it into his. own shalt
ble [a 'email house of prayer and
study]. iiiiii named it after his
father.. On Shabbos, he does ev-
erything: leads the prayers,
