ogy. These books mainly told
one how to deal with "going na-
tive;" but what I had always
feared might happen had now
begun to happen: I was "going
stranger." My journey to
Jerusalem, I had believed,
would enable me to share in an
experience that had always re-
mained on the periphery of my
life. I was touched by it, the
world of lernen into which I had
wandered; and then that touch
frightened me, because I knew
that however much I tried to
identify with the traditional
Jews around me, I would never
give up who I was, abandon my
foothold in the modern world in
favor of their world. I might
study the Torah again and
again, but did I really believe
now that everything was con-
tained in it? Was I ready to
grow old and gray over it?
Would I never swerve from it?
Certainly not. I was still a pro-
fessor of sociology.
Yet precisely because I had
been with the men in the study
circle, around the pages of holy
books, in ways that I had never
been before; because I felt, when
I was with them, that I was still
very deeply bound to the Or-
