Survivalism

possible social, political and
economic circumstances.
One of the basic facets of the
democratic way of life is the ra-
tional coping with doubt; with a
life filled with uncertainties and
ambiguities. When this doubt
is imposed on the level of sheer
physical existence, it reinforces
the rise of an ethos of survival
at the expenSe of a higher and
more purposeful ethos. Eventu-
ally, with the accumulation of
anxieties, it opens the door to
fanaticism, to messianism and
to simplistic solutions to com-
plex problems. Religious fanati-
cism combined with bigotry pro-
vides a way to eliminate unset-
tling doubts by freeing the indi-
vidual from the necessity of
painfully wrestling with his
doubts in a rational and critical
way.

•should be "a light to all na-
tions," they could not imagine
the implicatimis of building a
democracy in the shadow of a
continuous threat to existence.
This led to the unavoidable
abandonment of the unique
vision of Israel\ as an
"exemplary society.". The ethos
of survival filled the gap left by
this abandonment and eventu-
ally it led to the rise of fanatic
fundamentalism.
The goal of the champions of
democracy in Israel is, however,
not an impossible one. It is con-
nected with the replacement of
one ethos with another; with the
reinforcement of the tendency to
value a variety of views. With
that, the process of establishing
a democratic culture would re-
turn to the mainstream of
Zionism and with that could
come a continuation of the
struggle to cope with those two
fundamental issues: The
Jewishness of a pluralistic Israel
and Israel's universalistic moral
duty.
However, the ability to face
reality is a necessary precondi-
tion to achieving this goal.
Diaspora Jews have an impor-'
tant duty to fulfil in extricating
Israel from its current moral
crisis. But they too will have to
free themselves from anac-
hronistic perceptions and images
formed during Israel's childhood.
It is safe to assume that Is-
rael, as a normative center, has
a major role to play in the fu-
ture of the,Jewish people. Given
this assumption, it is clear that
Diaspora Jews must be involved
in helping Israel solve its ethi-
cal and moral crisis.
