WHAT MORE IN LIFE IS THERE?

a powerful story of four women
on the prairies of Kansas and
their fight for survival as they
challenge the environment and
seek new horizons ... Perform-
ances are Friday eves 8:30,
Saturdays, 5:30 and 9 p.m., and
Sunday nights 6:30 p.m.
Actors Alliance is a non-profit
educational company.
THINK TWICE before throw-
ing away old nail polish ... Go
around the house and use it to
coat the threads of all screw-on
handles or knobs ... It can keep
them tight for years.
BACK IN THE 1950S, a new
form of Russian roulette swept
Detroit and the country ... It
was vodka, an alcoholic bever-
age distilled from potatoes and
maise ... Vodka had had un-
precedented popularity in prev-
ious years, due to a number of
personality traits that were
found in no other liquor.
Its most apparent asset was
that it was odorless ... This
characteristic made it popular
with the charcoal grey set ...
Businessmen adopted it as their
fraternal drink because their
clients would not know they had
been drinking, glassy eyes not-
withstanding ... Vodka is also
colorless ... This was a great
boon to veteran toppers who
could now sit with what looked
like an innocent glass of water
on their table ... In reality, it
was transparent dynamite.
Being odorless and colorless,
it is also said that vodka is
tasteless ... Our research indi-
cates that this is not true ...
When taken neat, it has real
authority, but the taste is hard
to pin down ... Vodka comes in
two delicious flavors ... 100
proof and 80 proof ... Vodka is
also vitamin packed ... For
breakfast it can be taken in
orange juice ... a Screwdriver
... Another breakfast treat is
the Bloody Mary, which is
vodka and tomato juice with a
dash of tabasco sauce ... At
lunch for many, few things sur-
pass vodka and beef consomme
on the rocks.
At dinner, a Vodkatini will
set the gastric juices bubbling in
anticipation ... After a long day
at the race track, football game
or whatever, it is said that
vodka and tonic wins many
friends, and for a bedtime snack
vodka and milk has a whole-

some effect.
About 35 years ago, there
were two brands of vodka sell-
ing on the American market,
both imported ... 15 years later
there were over 30 brands sell-
ing in Michigan alone ... Don't
know how many there are to-
day.
THE AIR CONDITIONER
in a restaurant was blowing
right in on the back of a
scantily-dressed young lady, so
she quietly draped a napkin
over her bare back ... A boy at
the next table watched the op-
eration with great interest ...
"Get a load of that lady by the
window," he told his father.
"She's going to eat backwards!"
BILL KOFENDER should
try for the governor's seat ...
Then perhaps he can appoint
himself racing commissioner ...
and turn the state reigns over to
someone else ... Bill has been
affiliated with the horse racing
world about 30 years ... and
says he still can't understand
why people keep getting ap-
pointed who know absolutely
nothing about horse racing.
DID YOU EVER wonder how
the ice cream sundae came into
being? ... It was the result of a
blue law ... In the late '90s, an
Evanston, Ill. city ordinance
prohibited the sale of ice cream
sodas on Sunday . . . another
triumph for the blue-noses who
were then cocks of the walk in
those parts ... An enterprising
operator found a way to outfox
the blue noses ... He served ice
cream with syrup instead of
soda ... The correction caught
on ... and soon was in demand
seven days a week ... Choosing
of the name "sundae" was easy.
GEORGE YOUNG CKLW
radio game show originator and
head is authority for the state-
ment that a genuine novelty has
been introduced in the voting
process of the Soviet Union ...
Now, if a Russian citizen de-
mands a secret ballot, he steps
into a booth, pulls the curtain
and votes ... When he opens
the curtain, he's in a Siberian
labor camp.
