to accompany our

What Rachmanioff? . The
fellows will play concertos for
you too ... plus Latin, pop, top
40s, songs of yesteryears,
standards, anything ... it's a
fine group, folks.
YOU WON'T BE able to
forget the address of Don Var-
go's 1940 Chophouse on Jeffer-
son ... It's also the name of his
elegant eatery that opened this
week. '
Any similarity to the former
Don Gorenflow wholesale and
retail jewelers which the place
formerly held is a case of blind-
ness ... There's seating for 300
. with 180 upstairs and 120
downstairs ... When building
was taken over, only bare walls
remained plus a two-feet-thick,
3,000-pound safe.
Jerry Mound, interior-exterior
designer, came up with the
name, design, concept, layout
and colors ... The decor is art
deco with light pastel colors for
soft atmosphere ... Etched,
sandblasted glasA is around the
room ... Stainless steel hood
with curtain assures no smoke
blowing back from open exhibi-
tion kitchen . . . Outside the
kitchen is all stainless steel and
chrome . . . Padded chairs in
royal blue fabric and black
chrome are from Italy ... Ex-
terior has four shades of rose
with red neon band breaking
each tone ... There's neon all
about 1940 Chop House with its
art deco look ... oodles of glass
block walls and spacious look.
It's a Don Vargo restaurant,
so naturally you can expect an
extensive and varied wine list
. And Don has distinction of
being Michigan's only restau-
rant exclusively serving Angus
beef.

head of the Chinese American
Educational and Cultural Cen-
ter of Michigan, will come out
with a new book on Chinese din-
ing sometime in spring ... by a
major publisher . Elizabeth
and Jack McCarthy are co-hosts
of the CAEECC Chinese Gour-
met Banquet this Sunday, 6
p.m. at Southfield Civic Center
on Evergreen ... It's $35 a per-
son for sitdown dinner of foods

from many parts of China— ..
prepared by a team of Michi-
gan's leading chefs .. Should
be quite a delicious and fun
evening ... Call Elizabeth at
559-5579.

JUDY
FOLKSINGER
GOLDSTEIN has been a volun-

teer at Prentis Manor over a
year and a half ... doing her
thing there every Friday at 1
p.m. ... She'll also be at the
Federation Apartments on Ten
Mile 7 p.m. Oct. 3,,in its "Thank
You" program for volunteers.
THE PLACE on Woodward
now has cocktail —hour
entertainment three times a
week (Wednesday-Friday) as
well as five eves (Tuesday-
Saturday).

TAURANTS are listed in AAA

ropolitan Detroit restaurants of-
fering Sunday brunch, dining
and dancing plus those open

grouped by city.... A list of fa-
vored restaurants using bar-
becue cooking is included ...
