David Jerome Tomaszewski
will be called to the Torah on
the occasion of his bar mitzvah
on Saturday at the Livonia
Jewish Congregation.
David will have the honor of
representing another Jewish
child, Benjamin Berenfeld of
Moscow, Russia. Benjamin has
been denied the right to have a
bar mitzvah.
David is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Tomaszewski of
Livonia, and the grandson , of
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kossack of
Southfield, and grandson of Mrs.
Kathryn Tomaszevvski of Grand
Rapids.
David's Soviet "twin," Benja-
min, is the son of Mark and
Eugenia Berenfeld. His father is
a chemical engineer and a can-
didate in technical science in
chemical physics and quantum
chemistry.
The Berenfeld family has been
denied emmigration applications
to Israel since 1976. Several of-
ficial reasons have been given
for the denial. Eugenia's father
is a former K.G.B. officer.
David has attempted to corre-
spond with Benjamin to no
avail.' He has received no an-
swer to his letters. David still
will keep writing to Benjamin
regularly.

New York (JTA) — Some
2,000 persons staged a rally
Monday across from the United
Nations urging that the issue of
Soviet Jewry and human rights
be "given priority" in dis-
cussions between the United
States and the Soviet Union.
The rally, sponsored by the
Coalition* to Free Soviet Jews,
coincided with an address to the
General Assembly by Secretary
of State. George Shultz and came
on the eve of the addreas at the
UN by Soviet Foreign Minister
Eduard Shevardnadze.
In a related development,
Michigan Congressman William
S. Broomfield (R-Birminghan1);
co-sponsored a concurrent reso-
lution approyed by, the House
and Senate last week expressing
support for Soviet prisoner of
conscience Andrei Sakharov and
his family.
The
resolution
urged
President. Reagan "to protest, in
the strongest possible terms and
at the highest levels, repeated
violations- of the Sakharovs'
rights by Soviet authorities.
