Rabbi Richard Hertz

The fourth annual Richard C.
Hertz Institute on Reform
Judaism will be held at Temple
Beth El in a one-day seminar on
Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m.
The institute was established
in honor of Rabbi Hertz upon
his retirement as senior rabbi
after serving the community for
30 years. It was endowed by
Ellin Arden Lawson in memory
of her father and mother, Man-
uel E. and Selma E. Arden, long
time -members of Temple Beth
El.
This year's speaker is Prof.
Michael A. Meyer, professor of
Jewish history at the Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati. He
has served as visiting professor
at Antioch College, University
of Haifa, Ben-Gurion University
and Hebrew University in
Jerusalem besides lecturing at
Harvard, Michigan, Ohio State
and Yale.
His two books are, The Ori-
gins of the Modern Jew, for
which he won a prize from the
Jewish Book Council for the
best, book in 1967, and Ideas of
Jewish History. In 1982, he gave
the Leo Baeck Memorial Lec-
