when the Conservatives under
John Diefenbaker virtually ec-
lipsed the Liberals only to be
unseated five years later.
"That's an historic parallel
which I hope to take a part in
repeating," says Gray.
He also points out that of the
40 members of the federal Lib-
eral Party caucus; four are
Jews.
Earlier this year, the Liberals
recaptured control of the prov-
ince of Ontario after it had
spent 41 years in the Conserva-
tive fold. Gray proudly says he's
"in a limited way, part of that
history too, because in this area,
we certainly worked very closely
with our provincial compeers."
Gray adds "I was the only •
federal minister from Ontario
who actively supported David
Peterson (now Ontario Premier)
when he sought the leadership
of the Ontario Liberal Party in
1982. I take great satisfaction in
how well he campaigned and
how well he's done so far and
I'm sure will continue to do as
Premier." Gray even goes so far
as to project the 41-year-old
Peterson's length of service to be
as long as that of Sir Oliver
Mowat.
Because of the press of House
of Commons business, Gray was
unable to attend Peterson's
swearing-in ceremony in Toron-
to's Queen's Park. However,
Windsor Jewry was well repre-
sented at the historic event by
the venerable Senator David
Croll. Now 85, the Russian-born
Croll first served as mayor of
Windsor in 1930, and again in
1938-39. He was the first Jew to
be elected mayor of a Canadian
city, and later added to his im-
pressive string of Jewish firsts
his service in an Ontario cabinet
(he was named provincial minis-
ter of welfare in 1934 and thus
served as Crown guardian of the
Dionne quintuplets), and was
appointed to the Canadian Se-
nate in 1955. He's still there,
and Gray says that in the se-
nate or in (Liberal Party)
caucus, Croll's "the youngest
guy there." (Croll, incidentally,
is the uncle of Michigan's politi-
cal Levin brothers: Senator Carl
and Congressman Sander.)
Today, two Jews hold key
portfolios in the Ontario cabinet.
Jews have served as Chief Jus-
tice of the Supreme Court of
Canada (the equivalent position
was denied to Abe Fortas in the
United States), and the current
Canadian ambassador to the
U.S. is a Jew. Could a Jew be-
come Prithe Minister of Canada?
The scenario depends on an
awful lot of "ifs." If John Turner
stepped down as Liberal Party
leader, and if Herb Gray con-
vinced the party to allow him to
lead it into battle against the
Conservatives, and if the Liber-
als won ...
Sure, it could happen. And it
may come to be that a Jew may
lead Canada long before a Jew
is elected president of the
United States. The only dif-
ference is that in Canada, few
people would even notice and
make a fuss about it.
Except of course, we Jews. 0
