Mumford Gospel Choir and
Mumford's "1979 All-City Track
and Hurdle Champion, Minister
Anthony Claxton," a 1980
graduate of Mumford and foun-
der of World on Fire.
The press release listed sev-
eral student participants and six
Mumford faculty members, in-
cluding the principal and assis-
tant principal, as supporters of
the rally.
The American Jewish Con-
gress and American Civil Liber-
ties Union branches in Detroit
wrote to Dr. Jefferson last
spring in response to complaints
by Mumford teacher William S.
Schwedler. In July, the Detroit
News published a letter from
Schwedler, outlining his com-
plaints about the weekly Bible
classes, the WOF rallies and
choral programs of the Mumford
music department featuring "50
to 75 percent gospel music."
In August, Dr. Jefferson re-
sponded to the spring letter of
AJCongress board member Al-
bert Zack, principal at Franklin
High School in Livonia and
former principal at Pershing
High in Detroit. Zack had no
success in ending the programs
when he personally talked to
Petross, and Petross refused to
comment when he was contacted
by The Jewish News.
Dr. Jefferson apologized to
Zack for not responding sooner,
and stated in his Aug. 27 letter
that high school supervisor
Joseph Miller had already made
it clear to all principals, includ-
ing Petross at Mumford, that
assemblies of a religious nature
-should not be held.
Leon Cohan, president of the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, met pri-
vately with Dr. Jefferson last
week because of concerns that
Jefferson's written response had .
not covered all the issues.'"
Cohan told The Jewish News
that "Art Jefferson gave me as-
surances on these issues. He had
already notified us that he had
taken steps ... He is thoroughly
sensitive to these issues and
they will not be repeated."
William Schwedler confirmed
to The Jewish News this week
that there have been no further

incidents at Mumford "as of the
fourth week of school." Schwe-
dler has taught social studies in
the. Detroit Public Schools for 20
years, the last eight at Mum-
ford.
Schwedler reported "some
negative feedback" from some
Mumford students and staff.
"I've been snubbed by half the
staff," Schwedler said, "but I ex-
pected that. I didn't think
everyone would take this
gracefully." One teacher posted
Schwedler's Detroit News letter
on the bulletin board, and told
students, "This is the reason the
.(Bible) meetings could not be
held."
Schwedler said Mumford prin-
cipal Iry Petross and the school
administration "have taken this
as a personal attack." He has
had no official response from the
administration, but Petross re-
cently requested a 'meeting with
Schwedler and his union repre-
sentative. The union rep told
Schwedler to ask Petross to
make the request in writing,
giving the reason for the meet-
ing. Petross has not contacted
Schwedler again, nor even spo-
ken to him.
"I don't want to make a big
deal about this Schwedler said.
"But I have nothing to take
back or apologize for." He de-
scribes himself as a non-
practicing Episcopalian with
Christian interests, and says he
understands the school's motiva-
tion "to give the students all the
help they can get.
"But, unless the laws are
changed," religious programs
cannot be held in the schools.
"I'm old fashioned, As a teacher
of government and history, I
think the laws should be applied
equally."
