Good in Life Mr. & Mrs. Izzy Gold & Family top-ranking University of Michigan administrators. That's all well and good in his career — and the record proves that he began his labors for state and nation long before his phenomenal career of the past three decades. He now has a 50th Michigan anniversary with an achievement for which every citizen of this state owes him a debt of gratitude. When Michi- gan suffered immensely from the depression in the early 1930s, Bill Haber began to de- velop the idea of aiding the un- employed legislatively. The re- sult was the adoption of a sys- tem of unemployment insurance and out of it grew the unem- ployment compensation benefit. It was not an easy task. It was a battle for justice for the needy. Haber was called upon to draft Michigan's legislation to assure the necessary assistance. Addressing a joint session of the Michigan State Legislature, he overcame opposition and the Michigan Unemployment Com- pensation Commission, now known as the Michigan Unem- ployment Security Commission, went into being. This could be called his first and most effective act and his efforts were emulated. , Prof. Haber renders important services to the Israel educa- tional system. As an adviser on university affairs he has helped all of the Israeli colleges and he is especially valuable to the He- brew University in his capacity as a board member and activist in the university's behalf on the American scene. Octogenarian Bill Haber endlessly merits gratitude for his social-mindedness, ac- cumulating congratulations for noble services for all without distinction of race or creed. Ellmann Adds To Family Record Many achievements are linked with the Ellmann family names. Parents and sons all had and have much to their credit. James Ellmann was a High- land Park municipal judge. His wife; Jean Ellmann, was an ac- complished poet and opera and stage reviewer. Their three sons certainly inherited their par- ents' deep interest in cultural and civic matters. Judge Ellmann was a devoted Zionist, Jean Ellmann an inspirer of in- terfaith interests. Their sons: Prof. Richard Ellmann is the world-acclaimed authority on Joyce and an eminent Oxford scholar. - Erwin Ellmann is viewed by Michigan fellow attorneys as a brilliant legal scholar and as the author of the most scholarly briefs in Michigan law cases, specializing in labor problems. Now the youngest of the three brothers commands attention and he has acquired the desig- nation of "Michigan's Busiest Bureaucrat." Here is why: Bill Ellmann has just retired as chairman of the Mackinac Is- land State Park Commission and as court-appointed super- visor of the Ecorse Fire and Police Department. He held both state positions simultaneously while practicing law with em- phasis on arbitration. Never abandoning public serv- ice, Bill Ellmann continues to head the Michigan Employment Relations Commission which arbitrates labor disputes. That's how the youngest in the family carries on his civic interests in the spirit of his judge-Zionist father. Bill at the same time retains a deep inter- est in Israel, in forest-planting, Jewish National Fund identifi- cations, in synagogue and re- lated matters. That's the notable record of an accomplished family, and Bill Ellmann is chiefly in the limelight. Gleanings, in the inspiration he derives from the Bible, his being recorded in the parade of per- sonalities is truly merited. Impressive Parade Sachar Praise For Walter Field A massive applause accom- panied the appearance of a Max Fisher brochure devoted to Bible study and research by a revered fellow Detroiter. As was already recorded in these columns, Walter L. Field has gained a top-ranking posi- tion among Bible scholars with another of his Gleanings of the Bible. Scores of Conservative rabbis and many members of the Cong. Shaarey Zedek, who are among the recipients of copies of the Gleanings, are ex- pressing appreciation for the labors exerted by the Detroit poet-scholar in his Bible studies. Most impressive is the tribute accorded Walter Field by one of American Jewry's most distin- guished scholars and authors, Prof. Howard Sachar. Here is a portion of the Sachar message to Field: You are an amazing phe- nomenon.
