Halted At Mumford
Action gains cool
reception for complaining
teacher.

Detroit Public Schools Superin-
tendent Arthur Jefferson has ended
religious programs at Mumford High
School and given written and verbal
assurances that they will not recur
at Mumford or other Detroit high
schools. But Jefferson's action has
led to some backlash for the Mum-
ford teacher who originally com-
plained about the programs being
unconstitutional.
Jefferson's action bans weekly
meetings of a Christian fellowship
club. Mumford public address an-
nouncements advised students to
"bring your Bibles" to the meetings.
The Detroit-based World On Fire
For Jesus Outreach Crusade Team
(WOF), which has held two annual
rallies at Mumford, will now have to
rent the school's auditorium for its
rallies.
The World On Fire's rally on
Friday, March 8, was held during
regular school hours, according to a
press release announcing the event.
The show was billed as Mumford's
second annual "Youth Rally
Crusade" featuring Mumford stu-
dents and the WOFFJOC Team, the

Ethiopian Jews At
Impasse With Rabbis
Jerusalem (JTA) — Chanting,
"We are Jews in every way. The
rabbis are racists," some 400 Ethio-
pian Jews marched to the Western
Wall last Thursday to pray and pro-
test against the demands by the
Chief Rabbinical Council that they
undergo ritual immersion, a reli-
gious conversion rite, before they
can be allowed to marry.
The marchers were part of more
than 1,000 Ethiopian Jewish immig-
rants who have been camping for
over two weeks in the large square
outside the Heichal Shlomo, the
Chief Rabbinate headquarters, to
demonstrate their anger against the
rabbinical decree. They consider the
demand by Chief Rabbis Mordechai
Eliahu (Sephardic) and Avraham
Shapiro (Ashkenazic) for symbolic
