BBYO Units Gearing Up
For Oct. 13 Walk, Fair

When Detroit's Jewish com-
munity limbers up for We Walk
As One on Oct. 13, it will be
joined by hundreds . of
youngsters from the B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization.
The Walk, sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
The Jewish News, will be held
in conjunction with a Commu-
nity Fair as a demonstration of
Detroit's partnership with Israel
and the Jewish People. The
event is set for the Jewish
Community Campus in West
Bloomfield.
Walk Chairman Benjamin Ro-
senthal has been working
closely with Wendy Littky,
BBYO representative on the
Walk and Fair committee, and
recently he addressed a meeting
of BBYO chapter presidents. He
expressed appreciation that We
Walk As One and Community
Fair is a major program on the
organization's calendar and that
they have been extremely sup-
portive in helping to launch the
event. "Their efforts will help
make it a successful celebra-
tion," he said, "in terms of rais-
ing funds for the Allied Jewish
Campaign and in spreading
community spirit and excite-
ment about our links to Jews all
over the world."
Alan Yost, co-chairman of the
event with Susan Citrin, noted
that the event already has
created a sense of local and na-
tional solidarity thanks to
BBYO. "Enthusiasm for the
Walk and Fair has spread from
BBYO's local chapters to chap-
ters in Grand Rapids and
Windsor, and their members are
eager to get involved," he said.
According to Alan Newman,
president of the Great Lakes
AZA Council-Michigan Region,
B'nai B'rith has an interest in
the event that goes beyond col-
lecting money from sponsors,
walking the 11-mile route and
setting up a display at the Fair.
"Our goal is to create greater

awareness among our memben
of the Jews who need assistance
here in Detroit and overseas.
We need to have a better under.
standing of where Allied Jewish
Campaign contributions go and
how we can help those who are, •
depending on us," he said.
"Part of the incentive to par.
ticipate," added Emily Burns,
president of the Great Lakes
BBG Council-Michigan Region,
"is the annual trophy awarded
to the most outstanding chapter.
The award, she said, is pre.
sented to the chapter with the
most points "accumulated
throughout the year for in-
volvement in important pro-
grams and, events such as this."
The chapter with the most par.
ticipants in the Walk will re-
ceive the most points. Another
incentive she mentioned is food.
"We intend to eat a big lunch
and walk it off!"
Walkers will meet at
Hechtman Federation Apart.
ments at 1 p.m. for registration.
The Walk will begin at 1:30
p.m., and the Fair will follow at
2:30 p.m. at the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Center.
Pre-registration is necessary for
walkers signing up sponsors.

from Leonard Milstone at the
Federation Office, 965-3939.
