This is our second day in
Jerusalem, but I shall never
forget that moment of exhilira-
tion when the wheels of our 747
touched down on Ben-Gurion
Airport and rolled the wheels of
my mind to the phrase, "Not
tourist but toshav" (resident) ...
'Everyone on aliyah on this
flight was definitely identified
with the Orthodox community.
According to the volunteer
working in the lounge, this was
par for the course. It led me to
thinking that much of the agita-
tion we read about versus the
Israeli religious establishment is
really a moot point.
1. The others aren't really
coming; 2. Those who do, do not
necessarily have religio-legal
problems; 3. The few who do
could have them solved on an
individual basis and the unity of
our peoplehood is maintained. A
lot of egos are turning the divi-
siveness of Jewish practice into
media hype ...

Racial Politics
In Dearborn

As an organization dedicated
to understanding and respect
among all religions and races
we are disappointed by the tenor
of some of the campaign litera-
ture in Dearborn. Innuendos
and attacks on any ethnic group
hurt all of us.
We ask local churches, organ-
izations and mosques to speak
with their members and congre-
,g tions about prejudice and
stereotyping in the current
litical campaign. The use of
terminology such as "The Arab
Problem," "changes in demog-
raphics" and other code words
that signify derogatory attitudes
toward all members of any race
should be avoided.
We urge all candidates to ref-
rain from using ethnicity as a
method of dividing people.
There are many positive as-
pects of a community of diverse
ethnic peoples. The challenge of
leadership is to use these ex-
periences in building a model
community. Let those different
experiences work for Dearborn,
not against it.
