Donelda. They have a daugh-
ter, Terri Ann, a University
of Michigan graduate who is
married to a scientist and
living in Boulder, Colo.
There are two grandchildren,
Katie, 3, and Ryan, 1. The
Matlins also have a son,
David, who is a junior at
U-M.
When asked who he would
single out as being the most
helpful to him over the
years, Matlin mentioned
Catron, Thurston and Tom
Virgin (who managed an
American Legion team and
became athletic officer at the
Sunrise Post).
Of his 14 years in Detroit,
hii proudest accomplishment,
Matlin said, is that he
helped get the Beeper Ball
• special event started. Inde-
pendently, Sid Brodie and Ed
Albertson, Lions Club mem-

bers, had contacted Matlin
'about such a game involving
blind ballplayers. "It was too
late to do that year, but we
put something together for
the next year. I think that is
the most satisfying event I
ever started."
The game pits a blind
team against former Tigers,
who are blindfolded. The ball
"beeps" as it crosses the
plate and the batter swings
at the sound. This year's
game, held Aug. 18 before
the Tigers regular game
against Cleveland, marked
its seventh year.
What might Matlin have
done had he not gotten in-
volved in baseball?
"If I had enough ambition
I might have gone into law
school," he said. "I probably
would have ended up teach-
ing school." 0
