THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 20, 1985 3? Taste the joys of Yiddish the French are coming! the French are coming! in October ... CHATILLON a: hul Workmen's Circle Adult Yiddish Classes former on the roof in right- center field. "And, of course, the 1984 World Series and Championship playoffs were highlights." Detroit's 1972 AL East title is a vivid memory, but the Tigers were "robbed" by an umpire's bad call in the final game that cost them the pennant, Mat- lin said. Matlin got his first taste of baseball's executive side as business manager of the Bakersfield club, a position he held between 1948-1952. He recalled another story from those years. The team had signed five or six Mexi- can players in 1951 and one of them ate pancakes every morning. "We investigated (and found) that he had breakfast one Morning with his roommate and he (the roommate) had pancakes," Matlin said. "That was the only ward of English that he knew and so he had pan- cakes everyday." Not all the recollections are light. "Probably the most miser- able night I ever spent with a ballclub was when San- tiago Rosario hit Merritt Renew over the head with a bat in Vancouver in 1966," Matlin said, recalling his days as general manager and executive vice president with Vancouver, British Colum- bia, of the Triple A Pacific Coast League. Vancouver first baseman Rosario was standing in the on-deck circle during a game against Seattle's Triple A club when Seattle pitcher Jim Coates hit batter Ricardo Joseph with a pitch. "He had hit Joseph two or three times over the years," Matlin said. "This time Joseph walked out to the mound to ask him why (he did that). Coates takes off and runs. Merritt Renew, who was the catcher for the Seattle club, jumps on Joseph's back to wrestle him down ... Rosario, "a very nice, calm, tranquil guy" and "the last person you would expect to swing a bat," hit Renew over the head, Matlin said. "Mer- ritt later had some tough times. He came back and played baseball again, but that was a's very bad experi- ence, a very trying experi- ence. It was miserable. I sus- pended Rosario after the game. We got him out of the country, out of Canada, and back to Puerto Rico.
