'85 Jabotinsky
Prize Awarded

New York (JTA) — Jeanne
Kirkpatrick, former United
States Ambassador to the
United Nations, and Operation
Moses, the rescue mission that
brought 10,000 Ethiopian Jews
to Israel, are the co-recipients of
the 1985 $100,000 Jabotinsky
Prize-Defender of Jerusalem
Award.
In announcing the awards at
a news conference in New York
last week, Eryk Spektor, chair-
man of the Jabotinsky Founda-
tion said, "We are proud to
honor Ambassador Kirkpatrick
for her valiant support of Israel
and the Jewish people during
her tenure at the United Na-
tions: Mrs. Kirkpatric spoke out
tirelessly and eloquently in the
face of constant hostility and
harrassment."
Spektor announced that the
Operation Moses award funds
will be used to create 50
Jabotinsky scholarships at Is-
raeli institutions of higher
learning for young people
brought to Israel by Operation
Moses. The scholarship program
will be administered by the
three Jabotinsky Prize judges
who live in Israel.
The Jabotinsky Prize, which
is given for extraordinary efforts
in "defense of the rights of the
Jewish people," was inaugurated
in 1983, when a special found-
er's award was given to Nobel
Peace Prize laureate and former
Israeli Prime Minister
Menachem Begin.

UN Parley's
Action Hailed

New York (JTA) — A senior
Reagan Administration official
who attended the rtcently con-
cluded United Nations end-of-
Decade for Women conference as
a member of the United States
delegation categorized the
elimination of the "Zionism
equals racism" paragraph from
• the Conference's final document
as "the most singularly suc-
cessful aspect" of the entire
gathering.
Speaking before a special
forum convened by the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
New York, Linda Chavez, direc-
tor of public liason for the White
House, stated unequivocally
that "the very fact that that
item was left out of the docu-
ment allowed •us to accept the
document on consensus even
though there were a number of
other elements which were
troubling to us.
Labelling "Zionism equals ra-
cism" as "obscenity," Chavez re-
ported that support for the U.S.
position was garnered from "the
niost unlikely sources." Accord-
ing to Chavez, American dele-
gates were assigned to meet
with their counterparts from
other countries "to try and pre-
vent (the phrase) from being
interjected into the conference
once again."
