Washington (JTA) — As the
U.S., Israel and Jordan haggle
over acceptable partners for
Middle East peace talks, a new
member of Washington's lobby-
ing scene is pushing for its own
formula: no negotiations at all.
Having just opened an office
in the capital, the Americans for
a Safe Israel (AFSI) announced
last week it would try to turn
the Reagan Administratioi
away from the idea that terri-
tory can be traded for peace to
resolve the Arab-Israel conflict.
They will work to persuade
legislators that permanent Is-
raeli control of the West Gank,
Gaza and the Golan is essential
to Israeli security.
"The concept of trading terri-
tory fora peace treaty, which is
meaningless in the Middle East,
is something which we oppose,"
AFSI director Peter Goldman
told journalists at a press con-
ference in his new 'office last
Thursday.
Observing that some of his
views are at odds not only with
U.S. policy but with the views of
many others in the Jewish
community, Goldman said he is
opposed to negotiations with
Jordan, since any such talks
would be over. control of the
West Bank.

Rabbi Meier
Gets NY Pulpit

New York (JTA) — Rabbi
Marshall Meyer, an American-
born conservative , rabbi whose
human rights activities in
Argentina propelled him into
national prominence, has been
named senior rabbi of Cong.
B'nai Jeshurun in New York.
The 55-year-old Rabbi Meyer
will succeed Rabbi William Ber-
kowitz, who retired from his
post as head of the Upper West
Side synagogue in August 1984.

In addition to working with
Congress, AFSI hopes to coordi-
nate closely with some of the
Christian fundamentalist groups
supportive of Israel, Goldman
said. He added that his organ-
ization "has a plan" that "would
galvanize this great support"
among the country's evangelical
groups.
Founded 14 years ago to pro-
mote the view that a strong and
secure Israel is in the best
interest of the United States,
AFSI remains a small organiza-
tion, with some 6,000 members
spread over 12 chapters across
the country.
