• "This is the day of the crea-
tion of the world. This is the day
on which all the creatures of the
earth stand under judgment."
These phrases are from the
Machzor, the Hebrew prayer
book that is used on Rosh
Hashanah.
The High Holy Days, cli-
maxed by Yom Kippur, are sol-
emn days that express the uni-
versal human need for self-
purification, for taking inven-
tory of one's self, probing the
meaning , and purpose of one's
individual and group existence,
and then seeking through fast-
ing and repentance to change
for the better.
It .was not too long ago that
many skeptical, sophisticated
20th Century people looked
upon such religious ideas and
practices with elegant disdain
and smug superiority. But self-
indulgent, narissistic human be-
ings eventually had to face the
inescapable and frigthening re-
cord of an age of violence, injus-
tice and corruptionthat dis-
pensed with the biblical moral
disciplines and legal norms and
gave birth to Hiroshima,
Dachau and Auschwitz, Af-
ghanistan, Lebanon, Poland, Ire-
land, the PLO, Sakharov, Soviet
Jewry and South Africa.

There are very few preten-
SiOnS left about the vaunted, in-
nate moral superiorities of mod-
ern man, his belief in the in-
evitability of progress toward
Utopia, nor in messianic science
and technology as absolute un-
mixed blessings of secular salva-
tion. Man ultimately is a
paradox, as Jewish tradition has
always , affirmed. He is both
glorious creator and destructive
creature; and his creatureliness
is compounded , of the sinful
idolatries, the false gods of
power, egotism, greed .and pride.
Rosh Hashanah and the
Jewish holy day , period of peni-
tence are in effect moral sen-
sitivity systems, human poten-
tial movements which evolved
over 3,000 years of Jewish
agonizing and hard testing
about how to transform this
creature into a humane, com-
passionate personality' modeled
in the Divine image. It is also a
source of insight and spiritual
power to help achieve an ethical
community, a kingdom of priests
and a hay -natton, committed to
help redeem and heal a broken
and suffering world through
deeds of decency, mutual re-
spect, justice, kindness and
civilized values.
