Political killings; im- prisonment for political views; torture and cruel, in- human punishment; denial of fair trial — the entire litany of wrongs committed by a heavy-handed regime — are clearly recorded under the imprimatur of the State De- partment. All this, together with an ever-stronger drumbeat of protest against the Adminis- tration's rhetoric and no-win policy, must inevitably pro- duce a vital change in our government's approach. Con- gressman Stephen Solarz's remark that the July de- mand for limited U.S. sanc- tions by both- branches of Congress has "said Kaddish to 'constructive engage- Wish All Their Customers & Friends RODNICK BROS. 771-4350 ment' " hits the heart of the issue. The author of the flawed constructive engagement theory, adopted by President Reagan and championed strongly by National Secu- rity Advisor Robert McFar- lane, is Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Chester A. Crocker. He has perhaps unwittingly revealed the deep flaw in his attitude toward the South African tragedy by declaring: "It is not our task to choose be- tween black and white." This heartless remark recalls the myopia rampant in our State Department early in the Hit- ler era when word went out from Cordell Hull that mis- treatment of German Jews had virtually terminated. ii.11111) iFPr A Happy, Healthy NEW YEAR RANDY C. LETTERS Kosins Anti-Semitism Down On The Farm As a survivor, I did not find — with all due respect to the Anti-Defamation League's Mr. Perlmutter — the 20/20 pro- gram misleading. It looked real and quite shocking. I still remember the begin- ning of Hitler's era in Europe and I can't agree with the "head in the sand" policy. The constitutional freedoms should not be allowed to be used as an excuse to foment an armed insurrection against a legal, democratic government or any group in the society. Nathan Sloan Kahane And Oz: Study In Contrasts Your recent articles — high- lighting eminent Israelis Rabbi Meier Kahane and man of let- ters Amos Oz — present a study in contrasts. Rabbi Kahane is, as you titled him, a high priest of hate. He is said to be anti-democratic, a rabid racist by reason of his ad- vocacy to transfer the Israeli Arabs to where they belong, the other Arab countries. Amos Oz would embrace the Arabs, delve into the historic kinship be- tween us and them. His alle- giance to democracy would lead him to yield Judea and Samaria to the Arab majority to fashion a PLO state, and char- acteristically he is oozing out with love to the Arabs, and par- ticularly the PLO ... Rabbi Kahane remembers that the Arabs are treacherous folk; and if the Israelis were ever again attacked by the Arabs and their Iranian co- religionists and. driven ... with their backs to the sea, the local Arabs would stab their Israeli fellow-citizens in the back. And why could not' these Arabs go and live with their fellow-Arabs in the vast lands at the disposal of their Arab brethren? Israel took the Jews out of the Arab lands, now let the Arabs take out theirs from Israel. Exchange of populations is no novelty in the international community. All that need be said about Amos Oz is let him study the pre-Six-Day War map of Israel and note the narrow neck of land between the Mediterranean and the eastern border of Israel. If that situation were, cholila, to happen today, the Arabs to the west of Jordan, launching a sur- prise attack on Israel, could in 15 minutes cut that neck of land and thereby (cut) Israel in two. Let Mr. Oz think about this. I reviewed the article, "Fishy, But Good For You" in the Aug. 23 issue of The Jewish News. Although fish has been shown to be very beneficial in the preven- tion of atherosclerosis from high blood lipid levels, many recipes that were featured also included butter and sour cream as well as salt. Fats may promote choles- terol absorption by the body and have been shown to have an ad- verse affect on triglycerides. In addition, excess salt may aggra- vate existing hypertension. In our program, we have found that eliminating all fats from one's diet helps to control blood lipids in most individuals •• • Beverly Peiss 50%40% OFF ALL NAME BRANDS •Vertical Blinds • Levolor Blinds • Pleated Shades •Wood Blinds Free Professional Measure at No Obligation Free in Home Design Consulting THE BLIND SPOT The Congress Building 30555 Southfield Rd.
